Thief steals...bull semen! Thief Steals $75,000 Worth of Bull Semen
Wed Nov 2, 8:56 PM WOLFSVILLE, Md. - Someone stole $75,000 worth of bull semen from a Frederick County farm, the sheriff's office says. Eric Fleming said the six small canisters of frozen semen taken from a liquid nitrogen tank represented four to five years of collection work. He said he had planned to sell it and use the proceeds to expand his breeding herd of shorthorn beef cattle. "I'm so depressed about this that I probably will get out of the cattle business," Fleming said Tuesday. He said he found the semen missing from an outbuilding on his Stonewood Acres farm in northwestern Frederick County Sunday night. Fleming said the canisters held the semen of 40 to 50 bulls. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! | |

Doesn't the semen have to be "alive" to be able to serve its purpose? How could it possibly stay alive for five years in a frozen state?  | |

I'm not sure of the details of that.... but when I was little I put a live grasshopper in the freezer, and then took it out a day later, and it thawed out and hopped away.

It went in torpor state and was able to survive the low temprature, just like they do in nature, in the winter time. However, I seriously doubt semen would be able to perform the same survival strategy. | |

and people ship semen like this all over the world so the thieves would be able to make a lot of money if they knew what they were doing. on a side note - in my introductory biology class in university they put one tiny drop of bull semen on a microscope slide for us to view. that was the best advertisment for birth control they ever could have shown a group of 18 year olds!! it was insane to see the bazillions of little wigglies in just that little drop   She couldn't stop crying 'cause she knew he was gone to stay | |
