He didn't feel like there was anywhere else to do with the series. And I'm sure he'd be fine if anyone liked Halloween III - he produced it! He should have just done Halloween themed flicks, but not billed them as sequels. III should have just been titled Season of the Witch, and not given the weight of being a Halloween movie.
