I've always thought it was more of a fag-hag situation. Women love the gay male friend with the shoulder to cry on...

one day i would love to write a book called "the zeta dogs" about all the obscure, outrageous, unbelievable subcultures and fan communities out there. stuff like slash fiction writers and plushies and QVC addicts and the like...people who take "famming out" to a whole other level...it's something that fascinates me, not in a way that makes me want to laugh at them or belittle them, but more just because other people's obsessions can be really fascinating to me...not to mention it can sometimes hold a mirror to the wackier behavior of some of us so-called "normal" folks.

Oh, I know just what you mean. I must say, I find all that stuff fascinating as well. And I do think with Richard Simmons that it's something of a cult situation ("cult" in terms of "camp" as well as worship). While in the States I saw a lot of Discovery Health Channel ( eek ) and this one show about the "super obese..." at one point Simmons shows up, and would have about started a riot except that those folks couldn't move around too fast... neutral

who DIDN"T think he was gay? next we'll have richard simmons make some declaration of the pain of hiding he likes men. it's like when ellen degenerate came out...was there one person in america who didn't know?

i think you're missing the point. it's not about "passing" or "flaming" or "straight acting" or any of that. it's about being able to identify yourself publicly in an industry that STRONGLY recommends that you keep your sexuality to yourself if you want to remain a viable product for mainstream america.

richard simmons, scary raging flamer that he is, has never publicly come out as gay. believe it or not, he has an entire fan base of housewives and crazy cat ladies who think he's dreamy and quite the ladies man. and guess what? richard simmons makes money off that. he wouldn't if he came out and said, "guess what? i don't like girls. you ladies don't have a chance." of course, deep down, i'm sure his fans know this, but it's easy to deny in the meantime, isn't it?

meanwhile, ellen took that risk. for a while, it wasn't pretty. there was a backlash, and she didn't exactly orchestrate her coming out party with the most sterling of grace. but look at her now - she's come out the other side with her dignity in tact, and she's successful again. people don't give a shit that she's a lezbeeshan, and she doesn't wear it on her sleeve anymore...though she doesn't have anything to hide now. that's the point.

this is one of the many reasons john waters is a hero of mine - he never had to make some big "coming out" statement, because he came from the underground where it was hip to be queer, so when he went mainstream, people either either assumed he was gay or they really didn't want to think about it. lol it's like he just eased into being an out gay celebrity without the fanfare, and he's been accepted and celebrated for what he is.

Preach on brother.

The Starship Enterprise flies through the Xenon Galaxy. Sulu has called his friends and crewmates Scotty, Bones, Spock, and Kirk together to one of the internal chambers to discuss something “very important”.

“My friends,” Sulu begins. “I need to talk to you about something that I have been hiding from you. A very important part of my life I have not shared with you. A journey I have taken alone, without my faithful compatriots who are like brothers and…”

“I don’t have time for this,” Scotty says testily, in his usual Scottish brogue. “I know, I know…you’re gay. I’ve been signing for your damn Advocate magazines for years. Do you have anything else because I have a ship to run?”

Scotty leaves testily and the rest of the crew looks shocked. Unlike Scotty, who signed for the mail every day when the intergalactic postman came by, no one else had known or suspected that their friend, their comrade, was homosexual.

“I too am gay,” said Spock. “I am quite happy. I mean I would be if I could show emotions.”

“That’s not what he meant, you Vulcan idiot,” said Bones angrily. “It means that our friend Sulu here likes men.”

“I too like men,”said Spock. “I enjoy the company of males as I find their company stimulating. In a non-emotional way of course.

“No, you pointy eared bozo,” said Bones. “He really likes men. In the bedroom. You know, sleeping together. Doing the hippity dippity.”

Spock looks confused. Bones grabs a piece of paper and a pen and draws some images on the page. Spock looks confused and then gradually he understands. He raises his eyebrow.

“I am not so much into that,” Spock said. “But on Vulcan, we believe in logic when it comes to love. If you find it logical to love other men than I say you should go with what applies to your own logic. Logically speaking,” Spock says, leaving to do something logical.

“Sulu, man, I don’t know how to take this,” Bones says angrily. “Damn it, man, I’m a doctor not a cultural anthropologist. Damn it, it’s bad enough we have a Communist bastard like Checkov on board. And now a gay guy! What the hell is wrong with this crew?”

“Bones, I…” Sulu begins.

“Oh screw it, I’m a doctor not a Republican. Be gay, don’t be gay, I don’t care. Just don’t check me out in the shower alright.”
Bones leaves angrily and Sulu looks at Kirk who has remained quiet.

“Captain, I…” Sulu begins.

Captain Kirk smiles and, after adjusting his toupee, he raises his hands.

“Sulu...stop…right…there. You…are…my…friend. I…just…want…you…to…be happy.”

“Captain, even though all of this comes off as something written by a clumsy heterosexual bored on a Friday night, I thank you for being my friend.”

The two hug as the triumphant “Star Trek” theme plays.
All good things they say never last...

here's for the third post in a row! yay!

I've been thinking about the racial aspect of this since I found out yesterday. Cause, you know, it's my thing. How many straight Asians are in Hollywood? And how many out and about gay ones? How does this all tie into how the media and society portray Asian men (as weak, effeminate pussies disbelief)? Food for thought.

Can't say anything about the rest of the sub-cultures in fandoms, but as a die-hard slash fan, (but not a slash writer) I'll give my thoughts on that:

The slash community, regardless of fandom, is one of the few places where it's acceptable for women (the majority of slashers) to express an interest in watching or reading stories about 2 or more guys romantically or sexually involved with each other.

North American society considers it normal -even expects straight men to find 2 women arousing, but most people will still give a woman this face whofarted if she openly expresses a desire to watch 2 men get busy.

Why this double standard exists, I don't know. Maybe it's because so many bought into the idea that women can only enjoy love stories or sex scenes if there's someone they can identify with (i.e. a woman) involved. Or an even more outdated idea, that women simply aren't as interested in sex as men are.
