Dear Great Pumpkin,

Dear Great Pumpkin,

It is said that every year you rise from the Great Pumpkin Patch and go about delivering toys to all the good boys and girls of the world. Well, this Halloween will be my 26th on this earth and I have not as yet received one gift. Not the Light Bright I wished for when I was 5, not the Barbie Dream House I wanted when I was 9, certainly not the overly endowed Rock God husband or the winning lottery tickets I’ve wanted ever since Barbie’s mansion out grew it’s allure, but don’t get me wrong, I’m not bitter. All these disappointments have taught me, you’re just not the right guy to ask these things of, you’re not, as they say, a “can do” personality. You’re more of the go to guy of “not”. I get it, and I respect it. So, this year, I’ve decided to make a list of things I would like “not” to happen. Judging by your track record, I think you can handle it.

Ready for it? Ok …on we go then. I would like it if Karl Rove did NOT out my significant other as a covert CIA operative. I just don’t think I could handle that, especially since he still is in position of my pocket color TV. I would like it if a family of super intelligent genetically mutated rapid squirrels with razor sharp teeth and a dog eared copy of “The Art of War” did NOT decide to take up residence in my attic and keep me awake all night by playing (at full volume) “Mandy” by Barry Manilow, repeatedly, in the hopes of luring me out of my cozy bed and into their foul chestnut smelling paws. I would like it if an ax did NOT fall on my head. I would like it if Nicolas Cage did NOT agree to perform in yet another bottom of the barrel crap movie. I would like it if “Lost” did NOT jump the shark this season. I would like it if Britney Spears did NOT decide to create another “fragrance”. Those commercials of her and baseball capped Prince Charming running through the woods like rouge escapees from the Lynard Skinner Memorial Trailer Park’s semi annual production of “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream” are insufferable.

Lastly Great Pumpkin, I’d like to ask you for the big one. The most important NOT of all… Please Great Pumpkin do NOT let anyone lose their power of faith this year. There are so many reasons to do so. War, poverty, pain, illness, heartbreak, unemployment, dishonesty, fear. So many reasons to slip off into that soft quiet still blackness of the soul.

This week a little boy in my school lost his battle with cancer. He’d had it since he was 3 and a half. He was 11 when he closed his eyes for the last time. I did not know him, but I know they played bag pipes at his funeral today. I know the look his classmates were wearing when they heard the news. I feel the gap he left in so many people’s lives. I know what a fighter he was and how that gave people 5 times his age courage to face their lives. I’m not asking for children not to die. We all must die. But I ask you to NOT let us let go of the light that guides through the blackest of moonless nights. I ask you to NOT let us forget we are not alone. No matter what we are NOT hopless, unredeemable , or unloved.

And if by chance, I’ve got your number all wrong, and you do in fact make a delivery this year, kindly disregard all I have said. I’d like an IPOD.

Best regards,

Your pal,

Sweeny

I would like it if Nicolas Cage did NOT agree to perform in yet another bottom of the barrel crap movie.

That's just a little too hopeful.
