No, they switched the first girl because Damon complained she wasn't the right color. No lie. He "joked" about it in a quote but I'm pretty sure he wasn't joking.

It's a perpetuation of the American Dream... progress and such...

Ever notice how commercials will have dark grandparents and light/mixed grandchildren, but NEVER the reverse?

Progress in mass marketing land, I suppose.

Network exec: "Let's switch in a lighter/ethnically ambiguous daughter to boost our demographic numbers..."

nod keeps the whole thing that "light skinned or mixed is prettier" thing going.....

and yeah Calhoun...I'm glad Bernie didn't go that way either....

I could be wrong but I really doubt the color thing came from Damon. When I look @ his family & his kids, I have a hard time believing he's under that spell. BUT anything's possible, we turn on ourselves all the time & it's pathetic. In any case, I think he wouldn't have hired her in the first place if that kind of shit was in his head. I think the suits pressured him to replace the daughter, but that's just my hunch...

She was brought in because she was fine....

No offence, but that other girl wern't all that, and its cynical, but the producers wanted a hot daughter I guess? Mind u, calhoun does have a point proberly.

I think the new claire (which is the regular claire) is ok at what she does. She is not required to act much like the others are (heck even the geeky kid franklin has more lines then her lol )

"blinky doo's, blinky doo's"

Tisha loves mouthing off. Ad its funny when she does it. Reminds me of her "boomerang" character. She was funny then too.

hmm That's the first I've heard of Damon being light skinned lol Well, I dunno. I would have to hear the comment first hand. He is a comedian after all, he could have been making light of what he knows is a fucked up situation. But he could very well be the culprit, which is beyond whack hammer

Well, he is light compared to what the average brown Black person is. There are many shades of light-skinned people. He's a caramel-complected color. That's light.

Very true nod Seems like most ads w/ Black kids prefer mixed kids - check Sean John & the Gap in particular, pretty much any ad in Essence Mag, etc...

I could see if the new daughter on My Wife & Kids was a good actress, then they could justify the switch. But she's not - they literally did it for how much more appealing they think she is over the other girl. It's really trippy. I'm SO glad Bernie Mac didn't go that way w/ the casting of his show smile

How do you think they approached telling the original actress of the first season? hmmm

Dunno. I'm surprised they didn't just have her walk upstairs, never to be heard from again. Seems to be ABC's way... wink

You didn't prove that point at all! lol

thesexofit finds the replacement more attractive than the original actress, and I don't think many people would disagree that she is more attractive. It's not to say the first girl was ugly. She was just a pleasant enough looking young girl, whereas the replacement is IMHO an attractive girl by most people's standards. I really don't think it's down to the skin colour and I honestly don't think that's what thesexofit said at all. Flip the skin colours and the second girl would, I'd warrant, still be considered more attractive by most people. Don't try to put words in people's mouths. That's not to say that there isn't a bias towards lighter skinned girls as far as what is considered most attractive, but still it's not what thesexofit actually said, in my HO. neutral

See that's the thing. I didn't say she was unpleasant to look at. I just said that the replacement actress is, in my opinion, more attractive and would be considered so by most. Firstly, are you disputing this position? Secondly, are you asking me to define beauty? It wouldn't be an easy proposition but I could probably try. One thing I could guarantee you though, is that nowhere in my definition of beauty would I need to refer to skin colour. We all have our preferences, of course, but for me there are other features that take precedent over skin colour in my subjective opinion of what's attractive. I think that would be the same for a lot of people.

LOL! How come you two guys are so reluctant to tell me why you find the NEW daughter MORE attractive than the ORIGINAL daughter? I'm not asking for you to solve the Pythagoream Theorem, just tell me WHY you find the new one more attarctive than the old one.

Conventional beauty is still a subjective thing, to an extent, although people tend to share similar thoughts when it comes to defining beauty and degrees of beauty, hence there is an understanding between people as to what is beautiful and what is less so, rightly or wrongly. I can tell you what I personally feel about how attractive the two girls are, and I believe those feelings would be shared by many, although perhaps for different reasons. I hardly think it's necessary for me to elaborate in such a manner, but since you insist on so heavy-handedly pushing your erroneous point I'll humour you.

Here is quite a young girl, moderately attractive, not hired primarily for her appearance. Why do I think she's moderately attractive? Eyes, nose, lips, cheeks, hair... how does anybody judge how attractive someone is? It's the overall combination set against my own personal tastes and opinions. If I'm reluctant it's because of the age of the girl and thus how I'd view her. It's not a valid comparison for the fact that the girls are of different ages and so I'd view them in a different light, of course, since they were hired for very different reasons to provoke a different response from the viewer. This girl could grow up to be very attractive, but as yet she's just a young girl, and that's the point. She wasn't hired for the purpose of being attractive to males watching the show. She's just a young, pleasant looking girl.

This girl was hired, I think, primarily for her looks. She's attractive to me because of her eyes, hair, cheeks, lips and nose and those intangible factors that determine how attractive someone is to us. She was hired to be attractive to males watching the show, and hence she's an older, more physically developed girl with a generally agreed conventional beauty.

You're trying to railroad me into proving your point, but the comparison is not balanced or viable. The second girl was hired for an attractiveness that can be justifiably sexual in nature. The first girl has an attractiveness that is obviously not sexual, or certainly shouldn't be viewed as such. This alone has a great deal to do with why the second girl is more attractive.

Ultimately, to me, the idea of inherent independent beauty is a fallacy, but for the sake of this thread and considering the context of the programme and its intentions the reasons given above are why I say the second girl is more attractive.

It's common sense really, and I'd rather not have had to explain, but I hope that clears things up for you. biggrin

I'm sayin' nod Anytime someone brings up all the different shades of Brown & how it's supposedly "strange" for a light child to be born of darker parents & vice versa I just look to my own family: parents are both medium brown, kids are a rainbow (VERY light, medium brown, darker brown).
