Who Else Loves Trifle?

I'm making one on Friday because my cousin and his girlfriend are coming for dinner. I can't wait! I daren't make one whilst I'm on my own because I'd eat it all.

I love the squidginess of it and how aesthetically-pleasing it is, whilst in the bowl.

I'm toying with the idea of making a black-forest trifle but nowhere around here appears to stock cherry flavoured jelly. It's like a vital component along with chocolate cake, canned cherries, chocolate custard and cream.

I adore trifle too!

In fact I once made this fabulous one for a get together and one of my friends loved it so much she started making her own and bringing them to every gathering. It's nice I still get yummy trifle. But I'd like to make one again too. pout

You cut some sponge cake up and layer a bowl with it.

Then you put fruit on top of the sponge (usually canned fruit) and pour jelly over it. By jelly, I guess I mean "jello"...

Once it's set, you make some custard and let it go cold. Pour on the cold custard and top with whipped cream. Then you can put cherries on top or chocolate or flaked almonds or chopped nuts.

You can substitute the custard for choclate mousse if you're making a choc-flavoured trifle.

my husband is always wanting to make trifle, but it ends up more like tiramisu because he pours marsala all over it and uses those sponge fingers.

here jelly is made with gelatine.

the asians make a firm jelly from agar agar (sp?) which is vegetable based, but it wouldn't be the same, too firm.
