Where does your work fit in with your passion and vice versa?


I'll start. I work for Wells Fargo and am an Admin. Hopefully to be poromoted to glamourous title of Project Manager sometime soon. It pays the bills. I enjoy it only so much, though I am good at what I do. I would prefer to work for a funner company or maybe a department like Marketing or something I can understand...as the dept I am in...most of it goes over my head, though I get the gist of it.

My passion is music and I am either working on music (electronic downtempo/ambient), spinning music somewhere, or collaborating with others in either of these two veins. In regards to spinning music, I guess (eating humble pie here) I am the leader of my "crew" Ambi-Sonic...which is really me and 2 other dj's/artists. However I consider the Ambi-Sonic crew to be extended to those that help with all of the events we put on. I also run out website and create all of the art for flyers and promotional materials. It's almost a minijob.

I don't think I'll ever see my job connecting with my passion unless I end up working for a label, move out of the country (ambient music is not that much recognized here in the states), or work in a studio.

My work is in the Complaints Department of an energy company. I answer customers' written complaints; I dole out hush-money to stop them complaining; Then the nasty bastards see that there's a real signature on their written response and phone me up to call me a cunt.

I had to go to the interview room this morning to talk with a customer. It's a small closet-like room with a glass window in the middle, so they can't strangle you. It's all very Hannibal Lecter...

The customer came in wearing a burka and holding a wailing three year old child. Apparently, we'd estimated her gas meter readings for three years until she finally let the meter-reader in last month, to get an accurate read. Before you could say "Debt Recovery Action", the meter read came down the wires from the meter-man's Palm Pilot and created a £600 bill because we'd under-estimated her all that time.

She sat down and her opening salvo was: "Mister Justin, Mister Justin... My husband left me for a slut and now I have hyper-tension". I had to look at my shoes for a second to compose myself.

The computer on my side of the window was supposed to be connected to the billing system but it was as useless as a Speak & Spell. I kept tapping on the keyboard and nodding, praying that she wouldn't ask me to tilt the screen around to look at her account. The receptionist had thoughtfully installed a screensaver which featured the phrase "Praise The Lord!" scurrying around the monitor.

I kept nodding sympathetically, pointed out that she could have phoned us with her own readings and promised to deduct some of the balance as a gesture of goodwill.

After memorising her address, I got back to my desk, gave her a £100 bung, wrote her a nice letter and organised a payment plan, so she could repay the deficit over 36 months.

No doubt, next week she'll phone me up and call me a cunt.

As for my "passions". I don't have any at the minute. I really don't. No inclination to do anything, other than a vague idea to start a blog or write a book.

I hate my current job with a passion, does that count?

I work in corporate life for Target Financial Services and I have for almost 9 years. I enjoy the company, hate my job. I recently took a class in career and life planning and everything about it told me I'm in the wrong place right now. But how to get out... I'm not sure what my 'passion' is in life. By going through a set of index cards in class, I determined my life 'purpose' has something to do with using color and communication ideas. Not sure what that means. Except that I enjoy fashion, design, the written word and a good party. Oh - and I also love to travel. I don't know how to turn any of these into my life work, though. They are just random hobbies. I'm trying to figure that out now.

Does that kinda cover it?

If there was money to be had in my art...I'd be doing that full time. Apparently there is, if I promoted my music better...which I am very bad at. Even taking the time to learn how to do it...I am bad at.

If I had a year and a years salary...I would no doubt be able to do it full time.

I think random hobbies are cool as well. As long as you enjoy them. One could almost call what I do a hobby, as it makes no money and the IRS would probably label it as such if I were to get a business liscence. FUnny, but I get defensive when people call it a hobby, because I take it so very seriously.

No. My work does not.

I have a passion for art and people.

What I do is cold and filled with bickering and blame. I'm a total asshole out of necessity. But in real life, I'm agreeable.

I work as a Paralegal. I really like my job.

My passion is music. I feel that it's too late to do anything about my passion. I can read music and I used to play clarinet and saxophone. I also like to experiment with mixes on my computer. It's just a hobby.

community development and community health issues (advocacy)...especially with women...

I've been able to run two HIV programs targeting women in my life and WHEN I get this next job, I'll be able to continue to work with women with MS.

I will also do grassroots community focused programming. I love it.

My passion, as some of you may already know, is that i'm a musician.

However to avoid the hate of the industry that made me not take my instrument out of the case for 2 years at one point, i've resigned myself to playing just for the love of the music. So now I just play what I want, when I want, for folks that appreciate what we do and pay relatively well for it. That means we don't play that often but when we do it's a very unique and satisfying experience.

Now to sustain myself and my family, I have a corporate position with a major manufacturer of music recording equipment.
Being a bit of a nerd anyway, this satisfies that part of my personality as well as being directly related to music and other musicians.

You could probably say that i've got the best of both worlds.

I am a secretary. It's ok it pays the bills. But I am also a grad student in counseling. I LOVE IT! this is my passion. I counsel women and adolescents mainly but have counseled some men also. I have always been a people person and always a good communicator and listener. I have the gift of gaining trust from teenagers and young women, so that's who I really want to help.

Someone told me once that since I had this gift it was wrong not to use it. I will not be paid for this work I do for a bit, I have more to do, but I have the best of both worlds, even though the book work is HARD. I enjoy the actual interaction with the clients, and they enjoy talking to me.

Just write an article or somethin, I have a friend who is an editor for an online magazine, she said research a magazine and submit. I suggest the Slate magazine on MSN, they have quite a few folks that freelance. GO FOR IT!!!

I have never had a job that is also my passion. Working sucks.

I used to work in the grocery business for 14 years, and one day I decided that I wanted to do what I've always wanted to do, go into Real Estate.

I started in loans, now have passed my RE exam, and have several opportunities to work with finance AND real estate sales.

I just said "fuck it" one day because I was getting older and didn't want to regret it later in life.
