Watching it now, it might seem rude. But 30 years ago (OMG has it been that long?!?!?) it was cutrting edge television!! It was to Network television what shows like The Shield & the Sopranos are to cable. It was a real representation of an American family. Not like any of the sanitized shows of the past; Father Knows Best, Leave It To Beaver, etc... I thought it was funny.

Just funny.
One of my fave moments: Archie says sumthin' racist, Edith reacts*"Oh Archie...that's dumb." Archie:" Edith, all these years bein' married, & you just called me dumb?!" Edith: " I'm sorry Archie. I shouldn't have waited so long." *(I'm paraphrasing) [Edited 10/18/05 17:54pm]

I did not like this show as a kid. It wasn't until I was older and it was rerunning at a time I could watch it. I recall a few episodes that freaked me out...the one where Edith almost gets raped and the one where their gay friend and Michale get attacked and the gay friend dies.
I'll never forget Edith telling Gloria that she wasn't sure if she could ever go to church again. Very heartening episode. I hear that the last episode's final shot was Archie in his chair and the camera focused in on her's (she dies) and screen goes black. Those chairs are in the Smithsomian (sp?) Museum Christian Zombie Vampires

I'm not old enough to have seen any of the show in it's original run, but I've been watching re-runs my entire life.
When I was younger I didn't understand most of the humour or the issues it touched on, but now that I'm a bit older (a grand old 20!) I realize the huge impact this show had on popular culture. While it's true that a lot of the language used on the show would never be accepted nowadays, it's also true that nothing in the media today even comes close to challenging and ultimately shattering popular stereotypes about ethnic, sexual, social, and religious minorities. One episode in particular that sticks out in my mind was when Mike and Gloria had a somewhat flamboyant artist friend over for dinner, and Archie was incredulous that a fag was in his house, eating at his table. He went to the bar to complain to a "macho" cab driver friend about the presence of feminine "deviants". The episode closed with the macho guy coming out to Archie. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I rarely watched it as a child growing up, but every once in a while I'll catch it on reruns. Great stuff.

i loved it. loved it as a kid, love it now. when i was little, the political stuff went over my head (or did it?), but i loved when archie mispronounced stuff and i love when edith tried to sing, and i loved when gloria would have a crying fit and edith would start screeching "oh, GLOOO-OOO-OOO-RIA!!!"
watching it as an adult, i still laugh at that stuff, but i also really admire the satire that is completely gone in today's television.
