Tampa Florida.. I was so nervous! The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom - Anais Nin

My first flight was a school trip, I was 11 and we flew from Antwerp airport to Brussels. That's about 40 km. Amazing, isn't it?

I remember we were flying somewhere to have lunch with my dad's friends, so it must not have been that far. The only thing is that there were storms all around us, and we flew without being able to see anything the whole way. It was freaky, and there was so much turbulance, my mom hit her head on the ceiling more than once. Years later, I asked my dad how bad it really was, and he said that there was so much wind shear, he kept it to himself that he was worried we would crash. Wow. Thats tight.

It was in 1983, shortly before my 5th birthday. My family (well, my youngest brother hadn't been born yet, although he was in utero) flew from Boston to Indianapolis on Delta Air Lines, with a stop at the "Cincinnati" airport (trivia: it's actually across the state line in Kentucky). I remember being invited to visit the flight deck while in Cincinnati, although it might have been on the return flight back to Boston.
Two years later, at the age of 7, I flew by myself for the first time. That was on USAir (now US Airways) from Indianapolis to Boston. Of course, at that age, the flight attendants keep an eye on you and have orders to turn you over only to a specific person at the destination. My first solo flight without the "unaccompanied minor" supervision was at age 14, from Indianapolis to Newark, New Jersey, on Continental Airlines. And these days, I'm a Gold Elite member of Northwest Airlines' frequent flyer program, which means that when you're stuck in the back of the plane, crammed into a middle seat next to a screaming baby, I'm sitting up in First Class and enjoying free booze on a $220 ticket. However, I have been known to have trouble walking in a straight line when getting off the plane. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

It was around 1974 when my dad took me, my sister and my mum to India to see his country of birth. I was about 8 years old.
It was quite an eventful flight. We had to do an emergency landing in the middle of a desert. We stayed a few hours in a building which had mud-coloured water in it. I don't remember much apart from the water and the desert. Another plane came to take us. We had a stopover for a night in Afghanistan. I remember flying over the Himalayas pretty vividly. On the way back, as we were taxiing on the runway, my dad became concerned about a sound coming from the back of the aircraft. It turned out the rear door wouldn't lock properly. The co-pilot had to hold the door all the way back to England. It wouldn't be allowed now. (Thankfully).

1975. When I was 4 years old flying to San Diego with my Grandma. I remember the clouds from the window and spilling a can of 7-UP. But having the Stewardess not being upset. I thought I was in trouble.
