9/10s of a cent...

gas prices are bad enough as they are, but why the hell do they still list them as $3.09.9 - don't we know that that's $3.10? and have you ever gotten 2/10 of a cent back? does the gas price sign industry have a super-efficient lobbyist in Washington? nuts and why is it never .6 or .8? gas prices would probably be lower if the gas stations didn't have to list that extra 9.

rant over. i need a drink. confused

It is annoying, isn't it? I think prices are high enough to discontinue listing the stupid .9 cent anymore.

I've thought about this for years. Is there some psychological evidence that says that we buy things more if they have a 9 at the end of the price??? disbelief

if there was any evidence, don't you think Wal-Mart would have made a nice mint from it by now?

The more gas you buy, the more does that tenth of a cent start to matter. $3.09.9 X 100 = 309.90, whereas $3.10 X 100 = 310. You see, you would have lost a whole dime on your 100 gallon purchase if they'd rounded off that tenth of a cent. smile

It's probably the general awareness on the gas companies part about the value of multiplied fractions in big business that make them keep them at the gas stations too. And even though it looks ridiculous on the signs, I think being that consistent somehow shows a glimmer of honesty in the middle of all their corruption and dubious morality .

Gas is $50.00 here. Not really but that's what it feels like.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.
