Here in Stockholm there's a relatively new method (who knows, maybe it's old news in other countries?) where you drill a hole a few hundred metres down into the ground until you hit solid rock. Then you stick a rod of some sort - I think it contains a special liquid - in there and this causes the natural heat of the rock to be redirected into the house. It's a pretty expensive initial cost, but after it's done it usually covers as much as 70% of your heating needs for ZERO money. I find it quite incredible. And environmentally friendly too.

You guys blow me away! Too cool cool

Natural fossil fuels depleting, ok we are Swedes, lets just tap into the molten iron core at the centre of the earth and derive heat from there.

Fucking awesome, I want to live in Sweden pout

Just found a article on Geothermal heating.

Reading some of these statements is scary!! What the fuck has happened in America in the last 3 years?

I becomes an issue here in the UK with regard to pensioners not being able to afford to put their one bar gas fire on but not your average orger?

The quality of life in the US while I was there was fantastic; I earned a fraction of my UK salary but always had cash. Home, car and socialising were all so cheap in comparison. But these days it's like you are all on the bread line. If gas goes up a few cents suddenly everyone is broke!

sad I am sorry for anybody who this is a serious problem for.

The gas prices have doubled here. Then that filters into the electric companies and anyone else that uses gasoline. Heating/electricity is probably the second biggest expense people have so when that doubles it isn't good. I think it hits those on a budget or with limited extra spending cash the worst.

lol Ooooh the memories from my last relationship! He would get a huge extension cord, plug EVERYTHING into a power strip and then plug that into the outlet in the hallway that the neighbors paid for. Those were the days. disbelief

that reminds me of when i lived with my sister--she had just moved into this big ol' house and she didn't wanna pay the power company so she had one of her friends actually rig the power and heat; seriously, her friend shimmied up one of the light poles outside her house to turn the power on and off. she'd never have the heat on (except when she had friends over) so i had to use a space heater during the winter, and she'd never let anyone turn on any lights in the house till after 5 o'clock at night.

thank gawd i only lived with her sly ass for a few months. it was hell.

I called up our gas company (we've got gas heat) and had them switch us to the budget plan where they average out the cost over the entire year and then adjust it again at this time next year (they use the last 12 months usage to figure the average) it's gonna save our butts this year nod

we do the budget plan as well...

AND, thankfully we have a roommate who contributes to the gas bill, so even though it will go up this year again we can split it 3 ways

oh, and we keep our house cold in the winter. That's what blankets, sweaters and long underwear is for...

yeah, i think we'll all be hit hard this winter. please remember to give generously (that is, if you have any $$ left after filling up your car and bumping your heater up to a cozy 55 degrees) to your local nonprofits that help people with emergency financial assistance. the poorest in our communities who already live paycheck-to-paycheck will face some hard months - i'm especially worried about older folks and the disabled. the nonprofits are bracing for record-breaking requests for assistance.

nod

I already have a list of clients I know will be completely unable to pay their utilities this winter. The bummer is, we have no good resources to point them to. I think it's gonna be especially hard as your "standard" non-profit agencies will probably take a hit in donations this year as most folks have already given so much to the various disaster relief funds from this crazy year. It is not going to be pretty.

my parents don't turn on the heating because our ceilings are so high, the hot air goes straight up and it's all a waste! the house is pretty big so it costs an arm and a leg to heat it anyway.

I drive a pretty gas efficient car so it's not that awful. And I can't get health insurance anyway so I don't care!
I mean, like, where is the sun?
