as i understand it applekisses, you were the one to call in the fire.
so how did you first notice it?? smoke outside or in your apartment?

hug

I heard some screaming and was looking out my windows...I didn't see anything so I went out on my porch and a guy across the street started yelling at me that the garage was on fire.

I think they're still trying to gather evidence against her. The last time I talked with the detective he said they were almost positive the garage was an arson and the house was accidental.

Wow ! this reminds me of my ex girlfiends place but it and everything she owned burnt to the ground . luckily she grabbed her ferret(might be misspelled)
and jumped out of her 2nd story window waking up later to see all of her neighbors gathered around her and the house gone sad. I'm happy you are okay and same for your pets. I'd say you are most definitely in shock if it just happened yesterday. hang in there!

I was lucky that the firemen got there when they did...I only lost about three rooms of stuff (bathroom/bedroom/kitchen) and the pads on my furniture. I was VERY lucky. I started this thread last Monday...the fire happened on Oct. 9...so it's been over a week since it happened. But, I'm still somewhat in shock.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. sad

Your neighbor is likely to face a civil lawsuit as well. Presumably the landlord has insurance that covers damage to the building. After the insurance company pays the landlord, it can then seek reimbursement from the neighbor. This is called "subrogation."

Unfortunately, in my experience, people like your neighbor tend to be "judgment-proof"; i.e., they have no available assets. And that's especially true if they're in prison. neutral

sigh
I had a feeling that would be the case. I just hope she is held accountable in some manner for this. I know I can't bring a civil suit against her myself (she has basically nothing) but, if she's criminally processed and her kids are taken from her I'd feel better.
I have no idea what goes into proving someone is an arsonist...but, the cops tend to believe she did it.
I haven't heard anything from them in about a week. I wonder what's going on. I just hope they can prove she did this.

Please...you guys...if you rent and don't have renter's insurance GET IT NOW.

nod It's very cheap, and well worth the peace of mind. I pay about $20 per month for the following:

  • $1 million in "umbrella" personal liability coverage. It covers both my home and me wherever I go. The policy even covers stuff like me getting sued for slander.
  • $30,000 in personal property replacement coverage. (When shopping for a policy, it's important to ask whether it covers the cost of replacing your stuff, or just pays you the depreciated value.)
  • Earthquake endorsement. I live in a high-risk earthquake area, and although my landlord's insurance covers damage to the building in case of an earthquake, standard personal property coverage doesn't cover my stuff it gets damaged in an earthquake. So I have an endorsement for that.
  • $1,000 (I think) in no-fault injury insurance. If you visit my home and injure yourself, my insurance company will pay you up to $1,000, even if you were at fault. The idea is that you might be willing to accept a quick payoff and waive your right to sue me.

Thank you so much for breaking that down. I'm one of those generation X people who pretty much has all the friends out renting or newly owning places now, and sometimes I worry that they may not have purchased enough insurance to cover them in case of a tragedy like this. This makes me want to really confirm that evrybody's up on what they can do just in case of catastrophe...and good grief, peace and blessings to Applekisses during this horrendous ordeal....I just don't know what on earth I would do if I were in her position....bless her, bless her, bless her for just having made it out of the situation ALIVE (and as a fellow cat lover, I'm estatic to hear that her kitties are okay, too)...
