Pretentious bollocks

I was dragged to one of those art thing places once.It was all bollocks until I saw one particular piece that grabbed my attention. It didn't have a title so I named it, 'Confused-looking northern bloke with kebab remnants on shirt'.

Oh, how we laughed when I found out it was just a mirror.

Anyway, what's the most pretentious rubbish you've ever been to see in the name of art?

Do you really think DSOTM is pretentious bollocks or is the picture just something for us to look at ? biggrin

Anyway, I've seen plenty of pretentious bollocks. Ireland has a tax amnesty for artists, which means artists, writers and musicians pay no tax at all, the bastards. This is supposed to promote culture, and I guess it does, but it also encourages a plethora of pretentious wankers to talk a lot of bollocks and believe they are artists just because they can throw a bundle of sticks together and vomit on them.
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I've never really considered them (their music that is) to be pretentious. I guess making concept albums about very personal subjects could be considered self indulgent and pretentious, but they'd hardly be the only people guilty of that. biggrin

If anything, I'd say their music sounds more cliched now, but that's because it's been played to death, particularly songs like Another Brick in the Wall, or Money and The Great Gig in the Sky, which seem to have been used in about half the ads ever made.
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I dunno - i think their output screams, "we've taken a shit load of drugs" more than it does of being pretentious. But then both of those can lead to the same result. lol

I love Pink Floyd incidentally. So i'm biased. whistling

Well said. nod I will never understand why they are constantly being labled as "pretentious". confuse This album is a perfect example of 70's psychedelic rock, that's all. Nothing pretentious about it IMO. If I were a musician/songwriter back then, I would have written something similar as well, with all the pychedelics I've taken. lol And Gilmour's playing on it is just sublime. cloud9 It's somehow become the thing to do nowdays: label Pink Floyd (and also Radiohead, with those constant band comparisons) as pretentious. So cliche. shrug

And if I HAD to label one of their albums as being some self-indulgent, pseudo-intellectual effort, I'd say The Wall qualifies more than DSOTM. nod But I love that one too. I just don't listen to it as much.

I knew a guy who used to style his pubic hair. I'm not sure if his bollocks were into jazz or anything, but they sure looked pretty pretentious. biggrin

I've seen an exhibition of Yoko Ono's work, I guess she could be called pretentious as she does a lot of conceptual art, but I liked it.

oh, i don't think yoko's work is pretentious at all. it actually provokes thought about simple things, which i think is very sweet and charming. some of her stuff is pretty funny, even. some of it is very vulnerable. i enjoy her stuff, she has a great imagination.

I did enjoy the exhibition and some of it was interactive too which always makes it more interesting. I agree that she does have a great imagination and I think she also likes to provoke/stimulate discussion by being controversial. A lot of people dont like her as she is still viewed as the woman that caused friction amongst John Lennon and the rest of the Beatles and this tends to colour their view of her. But as an artist in her own right and away from the Beatles association I think she's interesting.
