The way I see it; either you do or you don't. Then there are degrees of being able to see them, some people are strong, others weak. Maybe your friends was able to see them all of the time, just not aware.

I did meet one lady once who claimed to see auras all the time. To be honest, I'm not sure I believed her - she was very emotional and, I thought, a little unstable.

Other people I've met are able to see them when they want; one has been a healer for a while now but has only seen auras very occassionally.

I'd love to be able to see them but haven't got there yet.
