Dogs used as shark bait

http://www.thesun.co.uk/a...17,00.html

Dogs used as shark bait
By IAN HEPBURN

STRAY dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait, The Sun can shockingly reveal.

The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, where Prince William spent two holidays.

A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found ALIVE with a huge double hook through its snout - like the dog above - and another through a leg.

The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line.

But other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks.

The RSPCA plans to petition the French government, demanding an end to the hideous torture.

"Based on a recent RĂ©union newspaper article which acknowledged the practice and reported the recent prosecution of a deliveryman (and amateur fisherman) on that island over animal cruelty charges associated with the described activity, we'd have to say there is some truth to the shark-fishing claim, although the practice does not appear to be as widespread or horrific (or tolerated) as implied by recent news stories. Rather than describing hordes of shark fisherman impaling live dogs on hooks and dragging them behind boats as shark bait, the article notes that employing dogs in shark-fishing is largely the province of a small group of amateur fisherman rather than large numbers of professionals, that the dogs used are generally dead animals picked up from roadsides or culled from the island's large population of unwanted strays (estimated at 150,000), and that the no-longer-alive animals are attached to unattended buoyed "shark trap" platforms rather than dragged alive behind boats."

I've been reading alot of the sun since i've been getting the bus to college, and i have noticed there is a hell of a lot of photoshops in that paper, I remember reading this the other day, it didn't look photo shopped in the paper, but in this photo it does, but as its the sun, I reckon its prob fake!

If the sun reports that grass is green, I would have to go out and check to make sure. THAT is how reliable they are.

This pic isn't just a photoshop job, its a BAD photoshop job!

Is this story true? I can't find anything about it on the RSPCA website, although the link looks real enough.

so this sounds like a hoax, at least to some degree.

the real story here, imo, is that in this region of France, they have 150,000 unwanted strays. THAT breaks my heart! sad

not to be graphic, but the puncture wounds from the hooks would be messier if it were real, and it would be a stupid place to hook an animal for such a purpose anyway, if you had the stomach to really think about it for a moment (which, unfortunately, i guess i do). it's a total fake job.

I am afraid that back in March I happpened upon a late-night investigative news programme on Danish TV2 showing that in some asian country (I didn't catch which as I can assure you I quickly zapped away), they flay dogs alive for their skin. They actually showed - albeit censored - the practice just as I happened upon the channel. I almost threw up and was haunted by it for months. neutral
