I don't know of any website in particular that explains it all, but I can clear up a couple of things:

First off, there are (basically) TWO Marvel Universes now. There is the old-school MU that we all grew up with, and there is the Ultimate Marvel Universe. In a nutshell, the Ultimate Universe is a way for Marvel to tell new stories that are not hindered by decades of contiuity. Heroes such as Spidey, The X-Men, The FF and The Avengers have their origins retold in new, modern settings that make them slightly more relevant to today. It actually works surprisingly well, most of the time.

In the regular Marvel U, Venom is still the alien symbiote from Secret Wars (it wasn't SWII, but rather the first that Spidey aquired the suit). Recently, Eddie Brock died, and the symbiote has found a new host.

In the Ultimate U, Venom is a suit that was designed to cure cancer by Parker and Brock's fathers. Its all a bit complicated, but it is a really cool update on the Venom story that, I feel, works much better.

As for the X-Men, there's a whole lotta stuff going on, as usual. Currently, the best of the books is Astonishing X-Men, by Buffy/Angel/Firefly writer and creator Joss Whedon. Ultimate X-Men is also pretty cool.

Thanks! Now, does that mean that any book with the title Ultimate... is from the Ultimate U, and any title without is not? Are they clearly labeled? Doesn't this cause a lot of confusion for casual fans?

Maybe we should leave this for another thread. Don't want to jack the Liefeld-bashing...

You've got it right. All the books clearly have the "Ultimate" title on them. For the record, here are the current ongoing titles:

Ultimate Spider-Man
Ultimate X-Men
The Ultimates (basically The Avengers)
Ultimate Fantastic Four

There is also an Ultimate Galactus mini-series, and an Ultimate Iron Man mini that are currently being published. There have been mini-series of the following as well:

Ultimate Daredevil & Elektra
Ultimate Elektra
Ultimate Six (a new version of the Sinister Six)
Ultimate Team Up

Some feel that Grant Morrison's Marvel Boy was the first Ultimate title, even though it didn't have the Ultimate moniker. It was published prior to the start of the Ultimate books, but many of the situations in it are more in line with the Ultimate U than the traditional MU. If this is the case, it must happen in the future, as it would contradict some of the things currently occurring.

Hidden Years was crap, through and through.

Byrne's FF is the stuff legends are made of. Its almost like he and Claremont have both been replaced by pod people. They are shadows of their former selves.

I really liked X-Men: Hidden Years. I heard its cancellation was partly why Byrne left Marvel.

Many feel that is where he jumped the shark, with the ending of Next Men. Personally, I thought his run on New Gods and the Spider-Man books were where it all went wrong.

I didn't think he ever ended Next Men. I remember the last issue had them being snatched into another dimension by some strange creature, and that was it. He's never explained what ever happened to the Next Men.

Visit Byrne's website for lots of history and info on Byrne: www.byrnerobotics.com

I haven't read fallen angel but i've heard rumors that it could b sort of a sequel 2 his great, wonderful, extraordinary run on Supergirl. Is there any link between both series?

It has been hinted, throughout the series, that "Lee" is actually Linda from the Supergirl series. However, now that DC has cancelled the series, David is taking it to another publisher, so that pretty much puts the kibosh on any hope of using Linda's backstory as Lee's. Word is that David plans on explaining her origin once it goes to the new publisher.

Oh, and you ABSOLUTELY should pick up this series! It is some of David's finest writing to date (and that is saying a whole lot, since he is one of the best writers in the biz).
[Edited 10/6/05 7:02am]

Well, thanx, i planned 2 buy the Fallen Angel TPB one of these days anyway. So it's creator owned & not part of the DCU? sad
I hope Linda Danvers gonna reappear one of these days in the new Supergirl series or anywhere else, i liked her & the ending of David's Supergirl was so sad 4 her.
By the way, i'm a big fan of Byrn, too. Haven't read anything recent from him so i don't know, but the last thing i read was his run on "Jack Kirby's Fourth World" from 1997 & it was GREAT! That guy gave me hundreds of hours of pleasure with FF, Superman, West Coast Avengers & many other series, he surely is one of the greatest comics writer ever with Peter D. & a few others!

Yeah, David had the foresight to make sure that he kept the rights to FA. He is taking it to a new publisher soon.

I TOTALLY agree about Linda Danvers. I LOVED that character, and the whole series was SOOOOO good! I wouldn't mind her showing up in the new Supergirl series, but only if David was allowed to write the issues featuring her.

I used to love Byrne, but he really has lost it. All you have to do is check out his new Doom Patrol series (which basically ignores all the previous DP continuity, even though it is set in the primary DCU), or his most recent Superman work. I knew the end was near when he did that horrid Spider-man origin story, Chapter One

I was so excited about that story, but then I read it! Ugh! To make it worse, they then put him in charge of the Spidey books, where he did that gawd-awful story that brought Aunt May back from the dead (The Green Goblin had hired an actress to fake her death! No, really!). So sad, because he used to be one of my faves.

I haven't read comics for a long time, but that saddens me to find out Byrne has gone downhill. I used to be a big fan of his. When I was growing up in the UK, I used to be a regular letter-writer to the British reprints of DC comics, and coined the word "Byrned", as in "I heard that Fantastic Four is going to be Byrned again".

Now, can someone point me in the direction of a website that explains what Marvel has done with the Marvel Universe over the last 15 years or so - I've seen covers of comics recently, and I can't make head nor tail of it all. Is Venom now nothing to do with Spidey's costume from Secret Wars II? What's going on with the X-Men?

untrue. there are about 50 Marvel Universes now, it seems. every book seems to operate in its own vacuum. hell, even among books under the umbrella of the same office, you have two different ongoing versions of the Hellfire Club turning up within a year. the mind boggles at how this shit happens. i realize continuity is only for nerds in the 2000's, but for christ's sake, some of this shit is just retarded. try sorting out this new Black Panther series too. egads.

Okay, I see your point, and there is the whole issue of all the various "alternate" timelines as well. I was speaking of the fact that (officially) there are two primary universes.

The real mess is in the X-Men books, where Claremont basically feels that he is the only one who should come up with continuity, so he ignores everything any other creators come up with.

Well, many comic fans disagree with me on him, but I feel he has lost it. Just look at the collaboration he did with Byrne on JLA last year. Friggin' HORRIBLE! Oh, and his new Excalibur series? barf He had a good run, but i think its time for him to hang it up.

Good Lord, I can scarcely believe my eyes.

At least someone like Rich Buckler (another advocate of the "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" discipline - remember him?) could actually make passable representations of the likes of Neal Adams and Jack Kirby's work.

I don't mind when somebody decides to "clone" other people's work, just as long as it's done with some style and panache, but this guy is a real fraud and should be nailed to the ceiling.

actually, it's exactly the opposite. he's the ONLY ONE trying to tie things together, at this point, to establish some sort of continuity between all the books. everyone is off doing anything they want, even with the characters in his book, and he's the only one trying to make everything make sense at the moment.

Hmmmm. Not sure I can get on board with that statement. He created such a mess with brining Magneto back from the dead (after Wolverine BEHEADED HIM) that I still haven't figured all that crap out. Xorn wasn't really Magneto, but some crazy dude who looked like Magneto, had the powers of Magneto and thought he was Magneto? Stupid, sloppy storytelling, all because Chris didn't want Magneto dead.
