Darryl Strawberry told police that when he walked out of a Delray Beach gas station after buying a pack of cigarettes, his Nissan Murano was gone.

Although Strawberry reported it stolen Sept. 17, Delray Beach police on Wednesday charged him with filing a false report after an anonymous caller told them another story.

Police recovered the rented Murano behind a Lake Worth sports bar Sept. 20, the same day they got a tip from an anonymous caller who told police that Strawberry gave her the keys to the SUV in a Delray Beach motel room.

The woman later dropped off Strawberry's wallet and keys at the Delray Beach Police Department, where he arrived on Wednesday to collect them.

Although Strawberry wouldn't tell police how the Murano was taken, he did say that the SUV was not stolen in the way he described earlier.

Police issued Strawberry a notice to appear and released him. He wasn't arrested because it was a misdemeanor charge, police said.

It isn't the first time that Strawberry, 43, of Lutz has had a run-in with police. For years, he struggled with a cocaine habit that sent him to treatment centers and then to prison. In 2003, Strawberry was released from a Gainesville prison after serving 11 months of an 18-month sentence for violating probation on cocaine possession charges.

Before getting suspended in 2000, the eight-time all-star had a promising career in Major League Baseball, which started with a phenomenal 1983 season in which he won the Rookie of the Year award.
