Could Anybody Recommend This Play? It's called, 'I Just Stopped By To See The Man'.
http://www.octagonbolton....TheMan.htm I'm at a loose-end and need to get out but the nearest cinema in any direction is 50 minutes by bus. So I thought I'd see a play at the local theatre but I'm unsure. I'm not really into the Blues and it looks like it may be some sort of "Blues musical". Has anybody seen this play? Spelling edit. Yeah I saw it. This was simply one of the most compelling dramas I have ever witnessed... This production is in a different class. Stephen Jeffreys' thoroughly compelling play gets its regional premiere courtesy of the admirable Octagon... a gripping and atmospheric tale. The cast of three aquits [sic] itself excellently... an unimpeachable production.

have not seen it, but am curious to now, after 9's glowing review Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

It was crap.
I spent £10.00 on a ticket to watch two men and a woman argue for 90 minutes. And that was just the first act. I left at the interval. What made it worse, is that they were drinking fake J.D. and smoking real cigarettes on stage whilst arguing. All I wanted was a drink and a cigarette. The premise was... It's 1975 and a British rock and roll band is playing a Football Stadium in Memphis. For "Britsh rock and roll band", read "The Rolling Stones". Improbably, the lead singer of the band (let's call him "Mick Jagger"), breaks into a house which he believes was once home to his Blues Idol (let's call the Blues Idol "Robert Johnson"). There's never any explanation as to how Mick Jagger finds the house nor any explanation as to why he would break in anyway - but he throws himself through the window. Inside the house, he finds a woman whom is Robert Johnson's daughter. Unbeknownst to Mick Jagger, Robert Johnson faked his own death and is taking a nap off-stage... Well the Blues man and the Rocker finally meet and thus start to argue about how "real" each others' interpretation of the Blues is. This went on for about 60 minutes. When something "profound" was being said, off-stage music played overhead to punctuate the supposedly dramatic tension. It sounded like Ry Cooder tuning up a banjo. I was dying to pee when the first act ended. They played a song called "Cemetery Blues" or something... The front door to his shack opened and the Blues Man saw his dead wife stood at the door. He was waving his arms around, crying out that the "evil" Blues had resurrected the dead... The lights in the auditorium started to strobe and there was a sound of thunder. It was just his daughter with a blanket over her head. I mean, there were only three actors in the cast, so he should have known better really. What a load of toss! I give it 3 out of 10. It only gets the 3 for set-design and lighting. There was a real tree in the theatre - I was impressed.
