I was in your part of the world a couple of weeks ago. Stayed in the Scotsman. Now that's a hotel I could happily stay in forever.

I suppose but the regulars it's 10am here and for the other more regulars on the west it's 7am so it's still extremeley early for the org regulars.

Youre right the Scotsman is very nice. Nice choice!

I was on hols with my wife.

We got a great deal too. We were looking at the rates when we checked in and realised that we were paying about half the normal nightly rate, which made us feel very good about ourselves indeed. We got the ferry over to Stranraer and drove up. As for what we did - wifey spent most of day 1 in Jenners while I checked out some of the local hostelries and spent a fortune in the Royal Mile Whisky shop. We just relaxed (i.e. drank) most of the time in Edinburgh and enjoyed being able to smoke in pubs for a change. Then we went to Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William, Glasgow, back down to Stranraer and home again. Had a great time. The only place I wouldn't really bother with again is Fort William. Famous for ... what exactly ? Being near a mountain ?

I managed to persuade my wife of the necessity to visit at least one distillery every day, but other that, now that I think of it, we didn't actually do that much in the way of 'culture'. We intended to visit a few castles but we seem to have forgotten (we'll do that next time), although we did see the Falkirk wheel. biggrin

Nah, I'm like twenty-five minutes away from the city. I've been "getting ready" to go out for the last four hours. I've just got out of the shower now, set up the ironing board to iron some clothes but thought I'd just check back on the org and have a cig, beforehand.

Asylum -

youd be in Ireland then? where about? my family is from Donegal. worship

sounds like you had a nice holiday, pity about the weather though. Good deal on the hotel, cos I wouldnt be able to afford it otherwise! Yeah I dont kno anything about Fort William....Im from Fife myself. Did you miss out the festival on purpose? its pretty mental when the place is swamped like that...I wouldnt come during it, but then I live here!

I know what you mean! God I wish I was home now. is it rainy and horrible like it is up here? Cause that usually makes me take 4 hours to get ready too. Just cant get motivated.

The sky looks like dishwater and it's pouring down. I can't find my brolly!

It's definitely milky-coffee and toast weather. I'm listening to a jazz station online too and I'm way too relaxed. If I don't do something though, I'll be mad at myself tomorrow that I wasted a day off work.

Yep, working in Dublin, living in Drogheda. Donegal is lovely, I've a sister living in Mountcharles, although I've only been up there a couple of times, so haven't really experienced the beauty of Donegal yet.

Actually, the weather was lovely - it only rained once! And we purposely chose Scotland in September for reasons of weather. We're probably the only two people on the planet who look for colder weather when we go on holiday - neither of us is into sun holidays as we both go crispy after 5 minutes of sun, and having melted in every other holiday destination we've been to we decided Scotland was the place for us.

Yes, we did decide to avoid the festival - Edinburgh is a mad enough place anyway, and we probably would've had great difficulty finding any accomodation that week.

Thats not so bad then! Id look for hot weather myself, but I see your point. The festival is just unbearable to me. I mean, I guess if you were on holiday the atmosphere and all the people would be exciting, but when you live here theres just an influx of thousands of people descending on you, badgering you with show and play flyers that you really dont want to see, when your just trying to walk home! Or go to the shops! You cant get a drink anywhere, you cant move on Princes st...Stupid bloody festival!

Anyway. I havent spent a whole lotta time in Ireland, but I plan to spend more. Ive felt like planning trips for my birthday every year since, well, forever. probably because Its on St Patricks Day.... lol

biggrin I know that feeling! Add a sprinkling of charity nazis and that's Dublin every day of the week.

If you're looking for a St. Patrick's Day celebration, New York or Chicago are the places to go. They go mad over there, they put green dye in the rivers, serve green Guinness, tons of marching bands, lots of fun etc.

Over here for the Dublin parade they shut all the city centre pubs, and the parade is like : Bank of Ireland float, Allied Irish Bank float, Northern Irish Bank float, ESB (Electricity Supply Board) float, some idiot dressed as a leprechaun riding a unicycle, Ulster Bank float, Friends First float, a group of uncoordinated 10 year olds doing 'Oirish' dancing, Standard Life float, and a few visiting marching bands from the US who must wonder why the fuck they bothered to travel all the way over for this, when they could've had some fun at home.

The only part of Paddy's day in Dublin that's worth gonig to is the skyfest - a firework display, but unless you chain yourself to the rails of the ha'penny bridge at about 2 o' clock in the day, you haven't a chance of getting near enough to actually see it.

So if you're planning to visit on Paddy's day, I would recommend anywhere but Dublin - Drogheda's parade, for example, is a much more enjoyable affair - it lasts 10 minutes and the pubs are open.

Interesting, thankyou!!

Yeah I really wanna go to Boston, but lets face it, Dublin is more in my price range!

I will do all the big Paddys day cities one day, as it stands now Im 22 and Ive never been out on st Patricks day! I choose not to a lot of the time though, its like what we were saying about the festival, its just a bit too mad for me. also, I always feel like its my birthday damnit, and while I want to make the whole city aware of this and become everyones new best friend, I also want to celebrate my birthday, not any other day! Im quite selfish like that boxed
