My pooter just up and died.

Yesterday morning, my computer just froze in the middle of what I was doing, and I rebooted and it didn't even bring up my desktop before it froze again at the Windows intro screen.

I'm afraid my computer is pooptoast. sigh

Anyone have this happen to them? Didja fix it?

Yikes! Do you have the original discs it came with? You could maybe try a total system restore.

Check everything is connected properly, perhaps a card has become loose or something. I know it's a long shot, but worth trying.

Are you getting a partial boot, i.e. do you get as far as seeing any screen activity, like bios messages, or the MS logo, or does it freeze pretty much straight away ?

it freezes at the MS logo. nod

and when i try to do a system recovery, it freezes on a blank screen.

Then I suggest you go into the bios on bootup and see what's showing up there. If it's getting past the bios to do an OS load, then it should be able to do one from your floppy/cd drive, so make sure your drives are all present and correct in bios.

It could be your hard drive (which should also show up in bios), but as far as I can remember you wouldn't get as far as the logo if the hard drive was fucked.

On a related note, this just reminded me that I have an old Mac that doesn't want to start-up. I want to get rid of the bitch, but when I try and boot it to trash what's on it, it just flashes a floppy disk symbol with a question mark in the middle. Anybody know how I proceed from here?

I suggest you proceed with a lump hammer.

A floppy disk symbol with a question mark in it sounds to me like it's trying to boot from an unbootable floppy disk. Have you checked to make sure there's nothing in the floppy drive ? If there's any logic to these error messages and symbols then that's what it ought to indicate. Either that or the hard drive is fucked and it's saying it needs a boot disk in the floppy drive to boot from. Possibly. Or not. You should bear in mind the fact that I don't use a mac and therefore don't actually know what I'm talking about. So if it were me, I'd go for the lump hammer.

It happens all the time.

Most feel that a computer is supposed to last you a long ass time. But I can tell you...if you use it frequently for whatever...figure on upgrading or getting a new one every 2 years.

Most of the time it's your hard drive and not your pooter (aka the mother board). Or it could be vice versa (which is better for you...so you didn't lose anything). But oft times it's just an old HD that is maxed out...which will cause your pooter not to boot.

I am willing to bet you can fix it. At least it's starting up...but not booting all the way.

You know any computer geeks?

You can always try kicking 9s in the ass. It may not help but it's a good frustration release biggrin
