It's my favourite type of holiday. All ships are different - do you know the name of the ship you're going on and what size it is? If you haven't already seen deckplans in the brochure, try looking these up on the net as they can give you a really good idea of what's around and, on the large ships, can help you orientate yourself before you arrive (some of the very large ones can take a day or two to get used to, especially figuring out where you are in relation to the front/back of the ship).

A lot of cruise ships have at least one pool, an entertainment lounge, bars, beauty salon (get your waxing done before you go though - the last ship I was on had a salon but they didn't wax) and casino. Entertainment is usually better on larger ships (in my experience).

Things to think about:

- what type of gratuity policy does the ship have? Some add a supplement to your bill at the end of the cruise, some include tips in the price of the cruise and leave envelopes in your cabin for any extra tips you want to give. If you're keeping track of your expenditure during the cruise, don't forget that gratuities may be added at the end.
- sometimes boarding can be a nightmare; sometimes it's a really smooth process. Be prepared that you might have a little wait either before you board or after you've boarded while they process you through.
- some operators will give you your cabin number when you book. Don't go rushing off to it until you've been processed as you sometimes get upgraded if you've booked an inside to an outside cabin, or if you're outside, to an upper deck.
- don't forget to take your pass with you when you leave the ship
- don't ever, ever, ever, ever, ever come back to the ship late! The ship will usually sail whether you're there or not

ps You won't feel any motion on larger ships at all (they're more like floating hotels). On smaller ships you can sometimes feel motion or hear the engines during berthing if you're at the back of the ship. People pay more to be on the upper decks but even on the lower decks you shouldn't feel the engines provided you're not at the very back.

Where are you going?

When I went to the Caribbean it was important to wake up early to explore the islands. We usually had to be back to the boat by 4 or 5 so if you slept late (like us) then you didn't get much time to do things off the ship. And the transportation on the islands were terrible, you had to wait until they had about 10 people going to the same place in order to get a ride...unless you wanted to pay $50 to get to the beach.
