The Cottonmouth snake is related to the copperhead but more dangerous. Venom is highly toxic with severe tissue destruction. Bites are fairly frequent in the southern United States. Color dark or nearly black, especially in adult of the species. There is a clear difference in the appearance of adult cottonmouths and juvenile snakes of the species. Click on the images to see pictures of the adult and young cottonmouth (or water moccasin,) and their range.
Average length 3½ feet, maximum length 6 feet.

Mind you, I'm no advocate of killing animals, truly I'm not, but this fucker was mad and was trying to bite me.

One day when I was around seven years old me and my parents were picking mushrooms in the forest. They made me wear high rubber boots because the Huggorm (the only poisonous snake in Sweden) could be lurking in that area. Being a seven-year-old with a slight sense of fashion I was appalled by the idea of being seen wearing those stupid boots, so I trailed off quite far away from where the others were.

Of course my incredible luck led me straight into the local Huggorm hot spot with more than one of them basking in the sun. Just when I realized where I was, one of them suddenly attacked me for no real reason and sunk his teeth into my rubber boot. I ran off screaming like a fire alarm with the snake stuck on my boot. lol I must have whipped the poor animal against a thousand rocks and bushes on the way because he looked pretty beaten up when I reached my parents. They unhooked him and threw him away. Needless to say, I wear rubber boots with pride these days.

Anxiety

you really can't mess around with snakes - either you stay out of their way, or if you stumbled across their path the wrong way, you unfortunately gotta do what you gotta do or else you're toast. snakes scare the crap out of me, but not like spiders, which i simply think are evil...i think snakes are really beautiful, but i don't wanna be anywhere near one.
