It's nice like a disney cruise ship is nice. Or Jupiter Is Nice. Or the big bang is nice. confused

Just for clarification, is that nice as in 'No really honey, it's very nice', or as in 'Oh my fucking God, niiiiice'?

hmmm

I was actually thinking of ordering McDonalds tonight, but by the time the already paltry fries arrive they've shrunk and withered away to nothing.

So instead I thought I'd have my usual cheap and cheerful meal of plain white rice with this sour pork sausage stuff with chili in, and a little soy sauce on top. Total cost? About 15 baht, or the equivalent of 37 cents. I'm addicted to it and never get bored.

What are your cheap favourites to eat at home?

37cents?! what is the exchange rate there? smile

and pasta is always good to have in the house...its quick and easy smile

Roughly 40 baht to the dollar I believe. Every standard Thai dish is under a dollar, from soup to fried rice to noodles, usually 20 to 30 baht depending on whether you have it 'phiiset' (special) or not.

Indeed. I get 74 baht to the pound. woot! At one time it was 76. When I first came to Thailand it was only 58! Prior to the 1997 crash here, it was only 40 or so. Amazing Thailand!

My brother in law is looking for a new place to rent. Today he was checking out a brand new house, 4 bedrooms, available for $160 a month.

They were selling nice new 2 bedroom houses near to us for $45,000 and I was tempted to put one in the wife's name and just go for it, but thought better of it. This area is already getting more expensive due to its handy location as far as leaving Bangkok for nearby major towns. I should buy one to sell again in 10 years.

Where my brother in law is currently renting, just outside Bangkok in a place called Tem Rak (full of love), his admittedly small 2 bedroom house would cost only $22,000 to buy. eek

Anxiety

fave el cheepo dinners:

white rice with sweet'n'sour sauce and black pepper (save those chinese take-out condiment packets!)

microwave quesadillas (slap some grated cheese between two tortillas, add some hot sauce, throw it in the microwave for a minute and a half, et voila)

brussels sprouts w/ butter (a big bowl of 'em is enough of a meal for me sometimes)

thin spaghetti w/ herbs and butter (VERY cheap and VERY satisfying)

and the pasta comment is thumbs up! i always keep lots of pasta in my cupboard, and at least one or two jars of pasta sauce...when i'm broke, that stuff is like gold.

i also keep some soba noodles in the pantry for when i'm broke, especially during winter - boil those suckers up and sprinkle some soy sauce over 'em...sometimes i have some miso in the fridge i can mix in for a bit of soup...a good block of miso is really helpful if you're broke a lot, especially during winter. nod
