ST. PETERSBURG -- A grueling stretch which saw the Red Sox play 30 games in 30 days ended with a thud at Tropicana Field.
With a win seeming secure the way Tim Wakefield mastered the Devil Rays over the first seven innings of Thursday's game, everything fell apart in a nightmarish bottom of the eighth inning that landed the Red Sox in second place for the first time in 65 days. The ultimate result was a crushing 7-4 loss that stung as much as any defeat this season. Leading, 4-2, entering the bottom of the eighth, Wakefield started the inning by giving up a single to Joey Gathright and then he hit Julio Lugo. Boston's knuckleballer seemingly got a big reprieve, courtesy of a 4-6-3 double play by Carl Crawford. But Jorge Cantu stroked an RBI single to left to make it a one-run game. That was all for Wakefield, and closer Mike Timlin came on and got shelled. Travis Lee greeted him with a single and Jonny Gomes followed with the game's biggest hit, a scorching liner over Edgar Renteria's glove that rolled all the way to the wall for a two-run triple that gave Tampa Bay its first lead of the night. Meanwhile, Randy Johnson pitched a gem in the Bronx, pushing the Yankees a half-game ahead of the Sox in the American League East. [Edited 9/21/05 21:08pm]

We're right behind you, like we were in the playoffs and then came back and kicked your asses, remember that? You have to, because we made history dammit!

Listen, Yankees have won so many god damn years because they've had the money to buy good players. So let me bask in my glory while we are still the champs will ya? And come on, the season isn't over yet!

Ahh the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry...it gets better each year. The season-ending series will be outstanding. I hope it goes down to the final day of the season, where a playoff spot is on the line and only the divisional winner will make the postseason. To be honest I'm pulling for the Yanks this year. Not because I don't like the Sox, I just get tired of Kurt Schilling with all of his self-aggrandizing. I mean really, I respect the fact that he pitched on a bum ankle with the bloody sock and all, but when you talk about how much courage you have and how gutty your performance was its a turn off. Imagine Jordan doing that after "the Flu Game" vs. Utah in the '97 Finals. Schill also pissed me off going on about Bush last year, for that alone I want the Sox to lose. [Edited 9/26/05 13:12pm]
