NO ... but they should have the power to send children home that cannot behave and let the parents/family/guardian deal with it ... not load the school system with those problems, so that the children that are there and ready to learn are held back while "Jane" is taught how to be nice

Not at school, no. I think when I'm a parent I may use some forms of physical punishment early on as I believe it's a clear and simple message if done properly in the right circumstances. It worked with me, after all.

For example, when my 16 month old nephew persistently plays with something he shouldn't he gets a very light slap on the wrist. Then he does it less. Simple and effective.

I don't think I'd like my children being spanked by myself or anyone else once they are old enough to imitate and fully comprehend the act and its effects.

The priests at my school used to thump me as well - but they did it nice and slow. Just kidding - I did go to Catholic school 1st through 12th grade, but I was never molested.

As far as corporal punishment in SCHOOL, I say no. But, at home, I think corporal punishment is called for. I'm not talking about beating the hell out of kids (that's not right), but I think kids these days need to learn discipline if they're ever going to make it in this world - give them love and affection all the time, but also let them know that there are consequences for their actions. A little whack on the booty here and there definitely helped me out.

Yes, parents need to step up to the plate and take responsibility for their children. I do not think the teacher needs to be disciplining the children as far as spankings go. Children should be taught right from wrong and good manners before going to school.
