The colours and design were all me. smile

Not bad for a room in basically a little wooden hut, but you should see the rest of it. confused

Yeah it is a great idea - but must say its rather low down my list of wants just now!

You belong on Cribs man! Speakers in headboards are just too much for me!!

We have a balcony where my real plans are aimed. The idea is to extend it outwards from the 1 metre projection it is now to 3.5 metres. In the middle there will be a low wooden table, surrounded by cushions and two Thai beds with the triangular headrests. On one side will be a large reclining wooden chair and on the other a sink and some storage. Add to this a heavy duty metal fan and then ultimately some speakers outside linked to the CD player in the room. That's if the government don't compulsorily buy back the land and property and build apartments. neutral

Ugly, old, useless, power-eating air-con unit in that pic. Ugh!

Sounds good, but can it take the load?! Thats a big increase.

It's no problem. We'll have a couple of support beams either side, concrete if necessary. The wood will be the most expensive thing. It's not cheap here trying to get 6 metre long planks for the floor. At the moment it's something I'm considering a luxury and will only do if we get to 8 or 9 months from now and still want to stay here a while. You can buy a new 2 bedroom house here for 21,000 GBP ($37,500) here so it may not be worth investing in.

Can the house take the load of the concrete though?! Sorry, youre talking to a building surveyor! I only ask because many people dont understand the complexities of this sort of thing!! boxed

The first floor (ground in UK) of the house is all concrete. The second floor (first floor in the UK) is wood. The balcony will be extended with wood outwards to 3.5 metres and two supports will hold it up, probably made of concrete. The concrete will be holding up the wooden balcony. Is this not sound? The roof of course will need to be extended, but much of it towards the front needs redoing anyway so we'll just get it all done.

When you say supports do you mean beams or columns? If beams, you have to ensure the house can carry that. You might need some more reinforcement in your walls, or crossbracing. If columns there shouldnt be a problem but itll mess up your yard/street/whatever is downstairs.
If youre extending the roof thats another load that needs carried. Unfortunately its not as easy as you sound like you think it is!

If you do anythin, anything at all, get a structural engineer! (Or whatever thats called in the US. If thats where you are...)
Its not worth the risk if you ever plan to sell or make money off it.
