I saw an article that said even with gas prices at $2.50 a gallon if you drive 15,000 miles a year it would take 5 to 9 years for your gas savings to equal the additional money they charge for the hybred.

So unless you are doing it to save the Earth you aren't doing yourselves any favors yet by purchasing one. Hopefully they will continue to drop in price as time goes on.

I tell you what. The same technology that is used to power these cars has other practical uses. You can use a fuel cell to heat and power a building and for huge industrial spaces the savings are astronomical.

Many new houses (well mansions) are being built with fuel cells to power the entire house. My grandpa was really looking into doing this before he died but it was a long wait and it really wasn't practical yet.

I'm wondering how long it will take for apartment complexes to have outlets to plug them into I know I'll need a new car in the next 2 years, thinking about a hybrid but I'm not a homeowner yet so I don't know how practical it would be for me

Let's use our heads here, do you really think big oil and the government want fuel cells to take over the power industry?? There are FAAAAR too many people that stand to lose ALOT of money if that would happen. The technology has been around for decades.....it all comes down to money as usual.

The at least $5,000 additional upfront cost for the hybid car compared to the non-hybrid is what makes it unpractical for me. You can buy a lot of gas for 5 G's. This is why it takes 5 years or so for the car to start saving you any money.

A friend of mine at work has one. He was giving us a ride in it and when you come to a stop it shuts off in economy mode. I guess 46 mpg city isn't enough, but very nice car. i'd get one.
