$8.50??? The movies here in NY are like $10.00 a pop and i agree.. I dont go to the movies to listen to other people talk, or yell, or speak on their cell phones or listen to babies cry... Its rude, ignorant and just inappropriate! If you wanna talk, take your ass outside! Have some respect for others who WANT to see the movie!

nod

I bet they're the same people who talk on airplanes at 2am and leave their stupid little overhead light on all night long.....bastards....

I agree that it was a rude and insensitive thing to say. But my question is - why did you feel it was necessary to point out that the guy was Caucasian? Even though you also said he was college-aged and a male, his ethnicity overshadows those facts due to the nature of this thread.

I'm not trying to jump down your throat, sirnoze. I just love semantics! nod

Because the story wouldn't have had a point barring that fact....

Would it have been different if the guy was African American?

Yes, no one on here would be calling the Black man racist for calling a Black woman Shaniqua.

Fauxie

I don't think this incident in isolation was an example of racism, but it certainly hints at it.

As for Shaniqua, I must admit I've made fun of those ghetto names before, and on this website. I guess I just find them amusing and slightly ridiculous. In the end though, it's a parent's choice and while I certainly won't be calling my children names like that, if they have meaning to the parents or even if they just like how they sound, that's fair enough. There are certainly worse names to give your children that they really won't thank you for when they're old enough to get taunted.

And yes, talking and making too much noise in movie theatres is annoying, whoever's doing it. Doubt I'll be shouting something out next time it happens though. It's kinda hypocritical no?

why did you assume this remark was about you? were you being loud?

i hope it wasn't intended as an insult toward your race

I obviously was quiet to hear the remark. These boys were in a mainly dominated Black Audience at the time, I myself am black too. We were there to see "The Excorcism of Emily Rose" (which was really good).

Somebody in the film booth kept fucking up the movie and the lights, and people were getting up out of their seats and complaining.

Then I have no idea what these boys were talking about but all of a sudden I heard that and I said, "Did he just call some black girl Shaniquah??"

Then I just heard the other guy say, "well if she hit me I would punch that bitch eyes out"

BTW I didnt hear anyone yelling or being loud in the theater so confuse

I dunno..we all do it so fuck it..oh well
i will never dance

I would call him an idiot.... neutral

I don't think its "racist"....just stupid and stereotyping. A black woman doesn't= hoodrat, ghetto ALTHOUGH i love my ghetto girls smile. That's sorta the issue...."Shaniqua" is about behavior, not simply race. If he called a woman in a business suit, behaving with some sense, Shaniqua, then I would reallllly look side ways at that person. Calling someone "shaniqua" is like the martin character Sha'nay nay....

sorta ghetto fab....loud, etc.

Its ignorant to stereotype based on what you see but its not racist. She wasn't held back from watching the movie, etc.

Beacause it states that white people can not see racism. It is not the colour of someones skin that denotes if they can see racism but their attitude to people of a different race. As usual it lumps every white person in with the moronic minority.
Thats why

But it isn't a RACIST comment, it may be a PREJUDICE comment but NOT a racist one. People need to learn the definition of RACISM, and learn it from a real source, not some quick reference book.

Absolute bullshit. Any comment that states that that because a person is white that they can not see racism is racist. If i said that black people cant do this or that then my ass would be accused of being racist in a flash so don't tell me that .

Dictionary definition

rac·ism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (rszm)
n.
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

So now tell me how its different. Or is it because I am white that I don't know what racism is?

Now, what race is ALWAYS trying to prove their superiority over EVERYONE else? Or do you care to engage in this topic, because I pull no punches and don't hold back. But let me get you a better definition since your dictionary seems a bit elementary:

RACISM FROM WEBSTER'S 3RD NEW INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY:

RACISM: The assumption that psychocultural traits and capacities are determined by biological race and that races differ decisively from one another which is usually coupled with a belief in the inherent superiority of a particular race and its right to domination over others

RACISM: 1a. - A doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles.

Simply put: Blacks in American CAN'T BE RACISTS BECAUSE THEY DO NOT DICTATE POLICY NOR ARE THEY IN PRIMARY CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY. Whites are.

Blacks can discriminate and be prejudice, but CANNOT BE RACIST.

There have been 2 definitions posted by you and I from different dictionaries. They both said essentially the same thing and yet you maintain that a black person cannot be racist but white people can .

here we go with the definition of racism....again....

I actually don't think Crucial is racist...he just can be rude...and annoying.. smile ..but I dont think he's racist.

Racism IS about power and control, not simply name calling. Someone calling me a nigger, has racial overtones but doesn't do anything to me at the end of the day. If I'm denied a job, education, etc....then that is racism. But that's just my opinion.

Racism is an action.
