JediMaster said: VERY interesting. One point this article doesn't address, and I think should, is whether or not it is a "racial" issue, or if unusual names in general get less responses. If they had used not-so-common names from other cultures, even if they are "white", would they have gotten fewer responses as well? If they had used a Celtic name such as "Rhiannon" or a French name like "Salvatore", would the response have been equally sparse? I would like to see the study expanded to include this. Good point. They really should do a more expansive and thorough study on this, it would be very interesting to see the results. I suspect that the results would quite likely show not just a bias against 'African sounding' names, but any particularly 'foreign' sounding ones be they 'black' or 'white'. in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the most discriminated against names were currently the very 'middle eastern' sounding ones. This is really quite concerning, and deserves a serious study.

I'm not so sure it's racist. WHy wuld it be? Because a white guy said it?? If a black person said it, it wouldn't be a big deal
If a white guy was being loud, I would probably make a comment about "John Boy" or "Opie", so..... Shaniqua is a ghetto name and I frequently use it in reference to ghetto girls....with the likes of "Tamika", "Tanisha", and "Shante" Smooches;)

no joke here.
But these names, Shaniqua, Quatar, etc. Are they truly african names? Or a product of the 60's ? Again, seriously, does anyone know?

If you're going to spin out on this sought of trivial shit you arn't going to enjoy life all that much. Save your rage for real racist behaviour not these little bursts of stereotyping. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I disagree, if it bothered her this much to ask us about it, they hey it was a big deal, at least to her. I'm a female black woman, and I would have taken offense if it were me, but I probably would have said something back. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I agree that it was a rude and insensitive thing to say. But my question is - why did you feel it was necessary to point out that the guy was Caucasian? Even though you also said he was college-aged and a male, his ethnicity overshadows those facts due to the nature of this thread.
I'm not trying to jump down your throat, sirnoze. I just love semantics! I mean, like, where is the sun?

I think as far as the names thing goes everyone always judges on the name they hear. its in our nature to try to form an idea about a person before we meet them. these cultural or ethnic or whatever names give a really strong idea of the persons ethnicity, whwther it be Shaniqua or Seamus. So i think its normal to categorise like this. Its not very nice, but its normal. I guess this guy was just stereotyping, following on from what Ive just said. He didnt have to group black women togather like that though, and he didnt have to say it out loud in public just to be smart. So while I dont know it that kind of stereotyping is necessarily racist, it was definitely rude. Silly boy.

$8.50??? The movies here in NY are like $10.00 a pop and i agree.. I dont go to the movies to listen to other people talk, or yell, or speak on their cell phones or listen to babies cry...
