LOS ANGELES BLACKOUT

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 12) - A large portion of Los Angeles was blacked out Monday when electrical power was lost.

The power got knocked out shortly before 1 p.m. after two power surges.

Traffic lights throughout downtown and the San Fernando Valley were not working, causing major traffic problems, according to video from helicopter news crews.

Downtown highrises also were darkened.

The city's department of water and power said it was investigating the cause and extent of the outage.

Hopefully all Orgers who live in the LA area are safe and not trapped in elevators and whatnot. I lived through the 2003 Blackout that hit the northeast and it is no fun! We had no electricty, gas, or water for more than 2 days.

I live in the Hollywood area & power was out at my house for about 30 minutes. However my neighbor on the next street over still has his power out.It seems like the areas surrounding downtown LA was affected:Hollywood, burbank, Koreatown, & parts of the valley are out.Traffic lights are out so it's creating major traffic jams at the moment.Im staying put & watching the news.

Imagine being trapped in an elevator with people and a steadily decreasing fresh air supply. That gives me the willies. There were tons of reports of that here during the 2003 Blackout. Its amazing how vulnerable we all are without electricity.

Another ploy to take away the focus off of Katrina and it's many errors. I wouldn't put it past Bush to have pulled the plug on L.A. himself.

I was thinking the same thing. Its a shame that we have to have such distrust for our governemt, but we have to. If we dont, they will be even more ready to rape and steal and lie to us.

The weird thing about the 2003 Blackout was that it was an hour or so before I even knew that their was a blackout. I just figured that the power was out in my apartment complex because there had been roaming power outages that summer, u know? So it took a little investigating to actually learn what was going on. It was one of the most awful 2 days ever. I had to bathe with cold bottled water.

Right here... I am outside the city... all is well....this is the first I have heard of it. Sounds as if it was rather momentary? Likely we overwhelmed the grid somehow. Although it is only 78 or so here today.

during the 2003 blackout, i was in the elevator when the light started flickering. It was a bit packed and someone was in a wheel chair, she was kinda praying and looked a bit scared, I was thinking what's her problem...we'll be out soon. Then I started to worry a bit, because I just stole some stuff from my job and I had them in a big bag..I didn't want my ass to get caught.

They're calling it a DWP (opposed to Edison customers) "power disruption".
Didn't notice anything here at the office which is located just south of downtown L.A.

Haven't been out in the street yet.

"Just on FOX they said the guy cut the wrong line then tried to hook it up again to the wrong line which caused a huge power surge and tripped off generators all throughout the system, causing 50% of customers to lose power...."

got this from a site....not a news site....if that's true...I feel sorry for the guy.
