My parents have been happily married for 34 years and they are still "in love" with each other. They walk hand-in-hand in public and even give each other a little kiss if they feel like it, be it in the supermarket or anywhere else. I don't think couples who are in love are so occupied with "oh look who extends my arm" or "I am holding your hand because I want everyone to see you are my girlfriend/boyfriend". They just want to feel each others touch. With all due respect: I don't think you have ever really been in love.

The illegality of gay marriage notwithstanding, what prevents you from holding his hand in public? Seriously. I'm not being facetious.

I would get my ass kicked or constantly made fun of if I were to hold hands with another man, in America. It's funny because some boyfriends that I had didn't hold my hand in public because of safety reasons. It kind of annoyed me but I understood. At my age I think I would do it more freely but it's still scary. Sometimes I revert to my internal homophobia and become embarrased by it. I have to snap myself back into shape.

But I've heard of more gay-friendly, open-minded whatever cities where that's definitely not the case: San Francisco, Baltimore, Atlanta, etc. I mean -- I'm not an authority on it, but it seems like the assault specter is an extreme one in this day and age. shrug

I'm 30 and my wife is 29. We've been married for eight years and we hold hands in public all the time. I'd speculate that the couples you're observing are genuinely in love. They don't have anything to prove, but at the same time they may just be affectionate people. After all this time, my wife and I are still very affectionate. Everyone's different, though. shrug

Atlanta is NOT one of those cities and you're right you're NOT an authority.

I love the feel of his skin.

Why would holding hands be a sign of insecurity????

To me two lovers holding hands is a beautiful jesture of their love
for one another.

I understand what you're saying but we get bashed even in San Francisco. Earlier this year(?) a couple got bashed on 17th and Castro. That's the gayest of all neighborhoods. The thing I don't understand is why the people at the neihghborhood bar didn't go outside and kick the living daylights out of the attackers.

My girlfriend and I aren't the holding-hands-in-public type.

We're more the leap-frogging-over-each-other-in-public type.

(Doesn't draw as much attention as one would think.)

Yes!

I actually think it says alot more when you hold them by their genitals in public. Now THAT is showing people that what you have is real.

Whenever my sweet'ums an' me are standing in line for something like the opera, ballet or live theatre, I notice that many of the passerby's ('specially the men) give off an expression on their faces that I translate as
" Now there's a gal whose hold on her man's genitals is real."

He doesn't understand.

Which is what I said at the outset, CS. Do my questions offend you? I apologize, if so.

My memory of this topic was jogged earlier today, when I was taking a lunchtime stroll and saw two young women walking hand in hand down the downtown marketplace. Sure, they got looks from some folks, but they didn't seem worried about being beaten or ridiculed. Maybe that's tied to the double standard our society puts on gay men and women, the politics of sexuality and such. Maybe it's deeper.

People who hold hands in public, older people not like teenagers but 30 or 40 year olds, get on my damn nerves. I just don't understand it. What insecurity leads couples to have to latch on to one another out in public? I mean I can understand special occasions like weddings or honeymoons but what's the deal with couples out at the mall? Are people just bragging ("hey look who's at the end of my arm") or are they afraid they are going to lose each other?

Just one of many issues with humanity...
