English teachers: The use of the word "itch"

Can an english professor school me on this. It has always irritated me to death when I heard some say that they are "itching" themselves, or that they are "itching an itch"

I was always under the impression that one can be "itching" to do something...but not "itching" something in particular.

like am I able to itch myself. Or am I supposed to scratch myself.

an itch is something that makes you need to scratch. you can't itch yourself. it's like saying you coughed yourself or you shivered yourself.
