Lets talk about Musicals

Heres my favs

"newsies" (1992) (yes, the one wiht a young christian bale prancing and dancing)

Love this film. Plus "king of new york" is one of the catctiest songs ever written, good nostalgia

"tap" (1988)

A lovely lil' film. Lots of good tap dancing by Gregory hines and a young savion glover. Also I think its the last thing sammy davis jr ever did. The city dancing scene is quite magical.

Love this film. The lighting, escapism, the naivety (perfect for kids), its awesome. (shame the poster is so shit)

i'm not big on musicals. i like 'hedwig' and i like 'rocky horror'.

i could probably get into some gilbert & sullivan if i heard the older recordings.

i don't like how musical theater performers sing. it annoys me. i think that's why i like rock musicals, because the actors don't have to sound so forced and trained and whatnot. i know it takes a lot of skill to sing in a proper musical theater style, i just don't care for it.

"newsies" is very "oliver!", which is classic, if a little too long and slow. I saw "newsies" in the cinema when i went to a party. The girls bloody loved all them boys dancing about and looking good mad

I cant stand andrew lloyd webber musicals. All them songs have the exact same arrangement. My 3 I picked really are the only ones I like. And they are unusally from the late 80's-early 90's lol

I know you don't like British cinema, but because you're a Brit I feel compelled to mention the star Jessie Matthews. Everheard of her? The movies I've seen of her were pretty good. I like musicals that also have incredible dance numbers.
What musical dancers do you like?

It is a black mark on my gay card...but I really don't like em. I like VERY FEW if any.

I did appreciate...

Hedwig, Chorus Line (that one was good), & Chicago. I don't really consider Purple Rain nor Grafitti Bridge to be musicals.

And I don't wanna get into Annie as I will NEVER be able to see it the same way after Serial Mom.

No, no no. It sucked. I saw it on west end, it was better. Alot better. And that wasn't that good.

How could "newsies" bomb and "chicago" win oscars?

I liked his charisma, but not his style. The man looked down too much. Keep your head up like Bill Robinson. That man was smooth.!!!!!

What do u mean by special. lol This is the 68 version Oliver starring Mark Lester who is a full grown man and the same age as Michael Jackson. biggrin

cool

I thought you were a dancer? Cabaret is a good story. Fosse and Liza were on point in the movie. The Night Porter with my dream Brit lover Charlotte Rampling delves into cabaret and the nazis.

For real? The poster is one of the best parts of the film. I made about 5 college floormates go see this the day it opened. Film students. Ohh, the shame. But anyway...

My favs: Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, West Side Story. And guilty pleasure Grease 2. Otherwise, not much of a musical homo.
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

I ain't no proper dancer. mad My dad loves "caberet", but it just has too much gay iconography (even if it wasn't deliberately intentional at first).

As for mark lester, oh yeah, I forgot he
mikes age lol

Are you good looking and can lift short women? That's probably the only skill you would need.

if we consider 'xanadu' a musical, then i'll count 'dancer in the dark', 'umbrellas of cherbourg' and 'absolute beginners'. nod

I loved that Norm MacDonald sketch on SNL, with the West-Side-Story-like setting. Norm would say something and they would all respond in song, with choreography and Norm would be like, "How'd you guys just improvise that song and unison dancing?! That's really weird". falloff

That movie was not great. Ambitious though, so I give it some credit

In other semi related musical news, how about "streets of fire"?

or "earth girls are easy"? Anything 80's is my motto. ANd them 2 are so very 80's lol
