We also need government-funded neutering programs for strays (particularly cats).

It breaks my heart to see so many unwanted animals around. We don't make it easier for them by bringing new ones into the world

over here, animal welfare groups are struggling to raise money for spay and neuter programs, while this is truly a problem affecting all of us - pet guardians and others alike. it would be cheaper to fund effective spay and neuter programs now than to deal with the outcomes later...

A year ago I did some temporary work for the environmental department of my local council. The dept. included the dog warden, who would take strays to kennels when she found them but all the kennels she took them to would put the animals down within 48 hours if their owner hadn't been found.

I couldn't continue to work there. It was heartbreaking to hear of these lovely, friendly dogs who'd go to the kennels quite happy and be dead within days. I couldn't understand why she couldn't take them to kennels such as the RSPCA who don't put healthy dogs down, but it is policy in my area to do what they do. I think it's wrong.
