It's more because Judy was a tragic character in real life.

if she hadn't died that day there wouldn't have all the queens in Stonewall crying.

That's right. Some people don't know that the Gay Rights movement started on the day that Judy Garland died. The Puerto Rican drag queens were not having it that night so they fought back.
