I dunno...

While I value and respect the benefits of the ceremony of burial (whether in a casket, in an urn or out at sea), I guess I'm less concerned with my physical self after death than I am with my spiritual self. My body being eaten by "consumers" as opposed to being eaten by maggots may not really effect me too much, to be honest. The quality of my life while alive is of more importance than the quality of my body after I've transcended into another form of being. Of course, it's the being seen as something TO consume while still alive that would have a different effect...

There's a question in The Book Of Questions which asks something like, "How would you feel if, upon your passing, your body was taken into the middle of the woods and simply left there to decay? If it would bother you, why?"...

A friend of mine told me about her grandfather being buried at sea. It had taken a long time to organise but had been his wish, as he believed that everything should be recycled back into the food chain and as a sailor he had wanted to be "recycled" back in this way.

After the funeral, all the mourners went and had a fish and chip supper, with fish caught locally. They knew her grandfather would want it that way, and want the fish that had eaten his body to eventually be caught and eaten.

Very macabre in some respects but also part of the cirle of life.

To be honest I don't know how I feel about it....

I realize my body is just the package my soul is in for the time being and it will rot and turn to dust, but my soul will go on, so logically i really shouldn'tcare what happens to my flesh and bones...

But I still do. I feel there is something sacred about it... about all of us...animals too (even though I do on rare ocassion eat meat)


When I die, I want to be entombed... I beg everyone I know when this comes up to not burn me and please don't put me in the ground. place my body in the wall of a church or somewhere beautiful....let my bones be part of something man has made that is beautiful, because in life I was beautiful and I was sacred even if I didn't know that or feel that very often.

Last night I was thinking about a charity I was involved with around 20-25 years ago, where the objective was to help underachievers and young people with very little in the way of job prospects but who had potential to do something with their lives.

To cut a long story short, part of what we did involved teaching them survival skills, and as part of that exercise, we killed a sheep and ate it.

I participated, as a vegetarian, in one of these killings for all sorts of reasons, one of them being that I wanted these people to understand where meat came from (a lot of them had never seen a sheep in real life, even at the ages of 18/19). The objectives for the charity in doing this were varied, but they had to be taught survival skills as they were being taken on expeditions into some really inhospitable places and had to be able to deal with emergencies.

Anyway, last night I was thinking that the exercise may have had more of an impact (from my vegetarian perspective at least) if the kids had been taken to a local slaughterhouse and seen what "really" happens, rather than a very quick, humane killing such as ours.

I've thought about it various times over the years and still feel guilty that I didn't stop the sheep being killed. Ironic really, that one sheep should have had such an impact on me when thousands are killed every week.

But, there you go, your thread and my thoughts of last night seem somehow to be linked. It's a subject I've obviously got to deal with and come up with some clear views on. At the moment, I find it difficult to articulate my views on people eating meat because I believe that it's natural for people to do that; I don't like the way animals are transported or killed, and I don't want to eat any animals but I do respect that people have a choice. I just wish we could find humane ways of dealing with animals, and not just assume that because meat is packaged nicely in a supermarket, no suffering has been involved. Everyone who eats meat is somehow involved in an animal's suffering, but not everybody seems to understand or respect that.
