It is slang, and YOU have turned into your parents when you drove them crazy saying the slang you grew up with. I don't use this modern day slang as I am not connected to it, but I do acknowledge it as some of the most creative communications ever contrived, but yes, the violence and its connotations can be a detriment to progress and perpetuate stereotypes. So where is it I stand...firmly behind it, but will never allow the youth in my midsts to use it unless it actually applies to them. I cannot turn a gangsta into whatever mainstream stigma society will deem as acceptable if they don't wish to live that way. To each his own, and if you are a thug, just know the potential consequences of your actions. This is what I tell my students. And there is NO TURNING BACK FROM DEATH...so walk your path with awareness and pride at the same time.

Im not turning into my parents. I'm just saying these white kids with the baggy pants hanging smoking a blunt in white-town suburbia want to come around and start acting "gangsta" saying "what up blood" and "nigga", be prepared to get beat down if you aint down with it.

I think Chris Rock summed it up pretty good on stage once.

"not a white guy in this audience would want to trade places with me...And I'm RICH."

We still have a distance to go. Every race has issues with discrimination. If you don't believe me, take a trip to Thailand or Japan and take a look. But here in America, I might just be too faithful in this country, I would expect more from all races.

An interesting sidebar.

Stuyvesant H.S. is home to some of the most brilliant kids in NYC. You have to take a test to get in.
They have a site started by the students originally as a "Teacher Evaluation" site. ( www.stuycom.net )

I just popped over to have a look and the message at the top of the page says...

SCHOOL IS OVER, YO!

...from the best of the best. lol

though i understand where people are coming from; what i can't stand is how people catagorize 'hip hop' slang pertaining to only 'blacks'. anyone using it as part of their daily vernacular is ignorant. black, white, etc...

sort of on the flip side:

and NO...i'm not defending ignorance or laziness here, but
what kills me is when the media and/or government attack c"rappers" about the language they use when many of them grew up in an environment where school was less of an obtainable dream that becoming a recording 'artist'. and now everyone's pissed because they're using those very words to laugh all the way to the bank.

now ain't dat shit ironic son? cool

My wife had a similar thing happen to her with one of her teenage friends. My wife and I are both black, yet her little hip-hop slangin' teenage friend said that we were in a interracial relationship, cuz she felt that she didn't talk black enough. It's a big problem when then lingual/ebonics generation gap isn't even 10 years wide. Kids will look at you as not bein black because you don't try to act cool, isntead of being yourself, and just as important, strivin to cultivate positive traits like being industrious, creative, intelligent, generous, good to your family, etc.

I was in a Dr. office with my 84 yr-old Grandmother and this 14yr old white boy who had gold fronts and was with his brother said to me, a female, what is up my nigga!!! I told him get his ass to the parking lot because he was about to get fucked up!!!

The staff put them out off the office and they looked so embarrased and they said that shit in front of my Grandmother!!!!

I told their Moms you need to teach your kids some damn manners and she said, well Blacks say nigga to each other anyways!!! I told her I would kick her pasty ass too!!!!

Being of Caucasian persuasion, it drives me INSANE to hear ANY White person drop the "N" bomb. I really think any Hip Hop album should have a specific disclaimer at the beginning of every record "White people don't have the pass to use this term!" What also drives me insane are the White girls that use it to be "down" with her new Black boyfriend and he lets her say it!!!!! eyepop

I can't stand these kids that have no clue and no awareness of where the artform came from. Their damn favorite artist is like fairy ass Nelly.
At least while I was a teen my favorite was Gangstarr and Tribe. And I got so much shit for it. Cause the kids were into damn wrecks in effect or some shit.

Also, they dont' understand the "perception of priveledge" that affects most White people...but that's another subject and it takes a long time to explain it to my White friends here.

I might as well join the club with u guys bcause I was and still "the whitest black girl" to some of my friends and it's mostly because of the music I listen to.
I was in my car with a couple of friends and I started blasting Natasha Bedingfield, These Words. Everybody just looked at me like eek

"What?"
"You listen to that!" eek "Why?"
"Why not?"

For the record, I'll say whatever the fuck I want. I don't mind saying 'pimp', 'gangsta', 'nigga' or whatever should the situation dictate that I wish to. Not that it's in my regular to-hand vocabulary, but still. I'm not given to wishing to cause offense to anyone, and I'm as mild-mannered as people come, but I really won't worry to much about someone deficient in skills of humour recognition knotting up their under-drawers about some word I might use.
