Why does the moon.......

....appear so large when close to the horizon; as opposed to high in the sky? Is it the perspective of being close to the Earth and trees, etc.?”

The moon illusion is a pretty confusing phenomenon. ....based on experimental studies on how people perceive the moon..... people perceive a moon on the horizon to be farther away than a moon seen overhead. Of course, it's not true, but our brains think it is. Then our brains appear to drive home this perception by exaggerating the moon's apparent size to our eyes.

Tonight's full moon is considered to be a blue moon, as it is the third full moon of four between the June solstice and the September equinox.

There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. The second full moon is called the blue moon.

The Other Kind of Blue Moon
An older definition for the blue moon is recorded in early issues of the Maine Farmer's Almanac. According to this definition, the blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons.

Well now, that makes too much sense...and a lot easier to understand than what I came up with. lol

The Jewish calendar is based on three astronomical phenomena: the rotation of the Earth about its axis (a day); the revolution of the moon about the Earth (a month); and the revolution of the Earth about the sun (a year).

Every 7 years (I think) we get to have a 13th month. smile
