What's your favourite DVD(s)?

I'm not talking about just the movie itself here, but the movie in combination with the techincal quality, extras, packaging etc - in other words the DVD product as a whole.

I have to go with the Alien Quadrilogy. Not only does it contain technically flawless versions of every one of the films along with extensive commentaries and special editions of every single one of the films, it also has gorgeous packaging. And last but not least: the best extras I've ever seen on a DVD.

The behind-the-scenes documentaries are well-structured into the three phases of moviemaking, they're in-depth, detailed and convey a genuine passion for moviemaking. But best of all: they're completely honest. No sugary oh-i-loved-to-work-with-all-these-creative-people bullshit. It's the gritty truth of conflicts and problems as well as the fun and exciting moments. When you've finished watching them you feel like you were actually part of the process of making the films. Absolutely fantastic and a small dream come true for a movie geek like myself.

I've never really been all that impressed by a dvd extras. At least not one any more so than any others.

I will tell my most embarrassing dvd moment, however. I once found myself staying home on a Friday night watching the dvd of the Bridget Jones sequel, eating ice cream, and there's a silly quiz on it you can play along with the movie so it stops and certain intervals and you choose A, B or C and at the end of the movie it tells you who your dream date is or some such nonesense. When I sat down with my ice cream and popped it in and thought "why the heck not?" when I saw the option for the quiz I burst out laughing seconds later.
I have not had a more cliche single gal moment in my LIFE. giggle

TheFrog

The Nightmare before Christmas. pretty much just because you get 'Vincent' as one of the extras. smile

Spirited Away - original japanese feature, the brilliant documentary (the making of), a cut above the usal documentaries you get as extras, plus other goodies.

ack! I wouldn't even say I liked the movie, really. Just some schlocka for a Friday evening I didn't feel like socializing let alone thinking all that much. lol.

My dream date was scientifically determined to be Colin Firth. But then my choices appeared to be between him and Hugh Grant, so there you are.

Yet another one I should have bought when I had the chance. I loved that movie. doh!

On the other hand I rarely like the making of documentaries for animated movies. I mean, how fun is it to watch those cartoonist geeks talk about their "visions" and see them tinker away at some computer? Or was this one drawn entirely by the director maybe?

I just looked it up on imdb and it seems very interesting. Not that it matters greatly, but what extras does it have?

well, if you're a fan of the movie or are just really intrigued by the film when you see it, the extras are great. there's a mini documentary about the impact of the movie on the fashion world, there's a phone interview recording that little edie did for interview magazine in the '70s, there's a photo gallery and there's an easter egg with a private telephone conversation between little edie (not long before she died) and albert maysles. but really, just being able to hear the directors talk about the film in the commentary track was fantastic enough - fans of this movie go nuts for any little morsel that falls from the sky, because it's all so interesting and you really do start feeling close to those two crazy ladies.
