Madonna, Renee Zellwiger compete over Grey Gardens role From Beverly Hills 213 Magazine:
You'll remember we broke the news in this space about Renee's and Gwyneth Paltrow's interest in the story of the late Edith and Edie Beale, the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jackie Onassis and Lee Radzwill. After that appeared, we received a call from screenwriter/director Mike Suscy, who has written a stunning screenplay called Grey Gardens, which was the name of the family home, and has been magnificently restored by Ben Bradlee and his wife Sally Quinn. Renee has apparently read the script and loves it. If she signs on, she'll portray Little Edie. Word reached us that Madonna was desperately trying to get a copy of the screenplay and was also interested in the part of Cousin Edie. We hate to play favorites, but we were hoping that Renee would decide to do it. Suggestion to Madonna: Why don't you go for the part of Big Edith? (Madge is actually closer in age to that part than to that of Little Edie.)
They're being bitchy. Little Edie was 56 when Grey Gardens was filmed. Her mother was near 80.  | |
