i can relate 1,000% to all of this. fortunately, after my first week of doing this last week, i was able to snap back pretty well over the weekend. and also, they have me working four day weeks, with 10 hour shifts each day. it's a really grueling schedule, but i have three days to recover and get some actual "real" sleep during the night hours.

if they don't hire someone for the position i'm covering by the end of this month, i'll likely have some form of lovely mental collapse.

comfort

Isn't there anyone who can start splitting the shift with you? Like do 2 days of it? Do they let you have Wednesdays off so you have a breather in there mid-week? I guess it's good that you only have 4 days, cuz once you're there it probably feels like the extra 2 hours isn't a big deal each night. One tough part about working the midnight shift is that when I would get out of work, I would feel like "hooray, it's finally ME time," when I got home and then stay up doing various things. The problem is, I only did that shift 2 or 3 times a week. The rest of the week, I'd be working afternoons. So I never got to reset my internal clock to that nightly routine. Every single day I had to improvise my sleep schedule to match my work hours. I guess I'm lucky I was young, cuz even 5 years later I have no idea how I'd deal.

i've been on graveyard for 2+ years now (1030pm-7am).
i'm awesome.
i can't sleep at night anymore.
i miss it.
fucks me up at vacation time.

i can't 'take a breather' then it messes up my schedule. if you do graveyard on a regular basis you have to stay consistant with your sleep schedule. you can't just sleep like 'regular folks' on your night off. you'd be screwed!!

hug Anx...you'll be ok....it only hurts for a little while. its cruel that you are only doing it for a couple of weeks...it takes about a month to get your system used to it.

wink
you're only as old as you feel..............so how old do i feel horny

Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants.

i don't mind being out of whack for a while. i don't want to get used to the schedule because i don't intend on doing this shift for very long. i also want to be able to go to sleep with my sweetie on my nights off, and wake up early for breakfast like we always do. if it gets to be too much for my system, i'll just have to discuss it with my boss and tell them i can't fill in anymore. simple as that.

I worked the graveyard shift for 4 years, doing janitorial work...cleaned a three story office building by myself at night, starting most nights anywhere between 9pm-midnight (I was also attending design classes during the day), and would work unti about 4-5am.

I kinda liked it, to be honest...there's a beautiful serenity at night within the silence, and after you get used to a different sleeping schedule, you appreciate things like no traffic on the streets as you come and go to work, 24-hour restaurants where you get to know the waitress and where everyone around you is a graveyard shift worker as well...and there's always a table open..lol..there are no lines anywhere, for gas, Cokes, whatever...and you feel as if you can take your time, nobody's rushing you.

My body clock, however, is now permanently screwed...I never know what time to go to bed, and I start to feel sleepy at wildly varying times of the day and night...

well, after about 3 or 4am, there's no work left to do...the hardest task is just keeping my eyes open. i don't know if i'd say it's "building" my mind, but it's certainly doing SOMEthing to my poor noodle.

Exactly it isn't an easy shift. I have worked the 6pm-6am for three and a half years and also I worked from 11pm-7pm. I usually be sleep and didn't want to do anything on my off-days but I like the fact that when the big bosses (the office people who works the 9-5) are away then the third shift can play a little in other words we get away with some stuff that won't even happen with first shift mainly. And also working night I also was benefit of the night premuim wink
