Woody Allen Was watching a show this weekend wherein Richard Schickel (Time Magazine) takes the Woodman through his films (through Hollywood Ending).
Say whatcha like 'bout his personal life, but there is no denying Woody has given us some of our greatest films (and his prose ain't nothin' to sneeze at, either). What is your favourite Woody Allen film? Favourite scene(s)? Favourite quotes (from a film or other)?

I really liked Husbands and Wives even though it didn't get as much attention as some of his other work.
Annie Hall is great too of course. And Hannah and Her Sisters. I don't remember any quotes, but I like the dialogue overall in those movies, and the characters too. I think I like his "dramas" better than his "comedies" since the dramas can be touching but are always funny too anyway.

I like Woody Allen (though I haven't seen everything) but honestly I find sometimes that his scenes are plodding, his storylines unnecessarily bad, the rhythm of his characters' delivery stale, and his humor all cut from the same cloth.

You know my favorite is Husbands & Wives, and my favorite scene is when Judy Davis is on a blind date and keeps running to her date's bedroom to call her estranged husband to tell him she knows who he's having an affair with. "You both like that sports BULLSHIT!!!"

Actually, that film got a lot of attention, because it was released hot on the heels of the Soon-Yi scandal and people were examining it with a microscope for parallels. It had a huge opening weekend. They showed that clip in the program and I forgot how, after the phone call, her date says, 'I don't think I can go out now - I'm upset' and she says, 'What the fuck have YOU got to be upset about?!' The Woodman mentions in this show that H&W was one of the films he was most satisfied with. He talked about how he felt the form of the film (hand-held, jump cuts, etc.) suited the psychological states of the characters and he enjoyed dispensing with the "niceties" of filmmaking.

~~waits for abuse~~ The only statement I'd agree with is the last one ("his humor (is) all cut from the same cloth"). But couldn't you say that about every filmmaker and/or comedian? Some of his recent films are certainly not great, but I find there is generally something worthwhile in each of them.

I prefer his later, less funny films. I would recommend:
Stardust Memories Zelig The Purple Rose of Cairo September Another Woman Crimes & Misdemeanors Alice Shadows & Fog Husbands & Wives Deconstructing Harry Celebrity

Easily, Manhattan.
My favorite part is the ending, and the perfect look of confusion/acceptance/sadness on his face when he says goodbye to her. I really think that movie was his best performance.

I think i've liked pretty much every Woody Allen movie. I'd probably choose 'Sweet and Lowdown', though, even though it's not a typical film of his, i guess. It's everything I want in a film, really. Warm, funny, touching, fabulous music and a couple of magnificent performances by Sean Penn and Samantha Morton.

True (well, with the exceptions of September and Another Woman). I was just riffing on the "early, funny films" line from Stardust Memories.

I'd have to say the attempted murder by car in "Take the MOney and Run" is hilarious. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
