It's a horrible loss, I agree. But, how is it an end to actual news at networks? There are other anchors and correspondents.

yeah..however, brokaw, rathers and jennings had editorial control and often refused to sensationalize their programs....famously rathers refused to even mention the scott peterson trial.....i think his approving of the bush papers was in part his attempt to remain relevent in this fox news soundbit era...

now that the big three are gone we are going to see less actual news reported....and we will see more idiots like bush elected president.

Hopefully, we'll see an end to the "white male as only credible news source era." Bernard Shaw, Connie Chung (before her "between you and me" dupe), Carole Simpson, Joe Johns, Bryant Gumbel, Gwen Ifill, and many others? Not even on the radar... disbelief It's like the 1960's again.

Truly sad. I was shocked when I heard the news. I thought that he might beat the disease but it wasn't meant to be. He was an incredible anchor and you could tell that he was into getting the news out there for the public. My prayers are with the family.

I think I heard today that lung cancer is the #1 killer of American men & women - muufuckas need to take this (& other smoking related deaths) as a wakeup call NOW. He was only 67, could have had many years left to come. Put the cigarrettes DOWN exclaim disbelief

How you can make some statement about racism in a thread about a great man is beyond me. You need your bolts tightened.

We 80's babies....can recall those big three news anchors..

Jennings,
Rather,
Brokaw....

It's a major loss and the closure of a chapter in our lives as the generation that grew up on television....

I know. This is terrible news. I hate having to start off my day hearing about this. I am going to miss Tom's voice and presense on the Nightly News. He will be tremendously missed. This is so sad.

PLEASE PEOPLE, STOP SMOKING NOW!

it was right after the oj trial...an airline plane (with over 100 people) fell into the atlantic off of florida...somehow a prankster called in by saying he witnessed the plane fell and was very serious and disciptive with what he saw...at the end he said, "i i ...i think i saw oj flying the plane"...

and cut.....

Rather's quickly apologized and went on with the news..

No, what happened was O.J. was holed up in his mansion soon after the chase. ABC did a special report, and during the broadcast, a Stern fan called in pretending to be O.J.'s neighbor, Mr. Higgins. The dude talked like Stepin' Fetchit(like someone talking in dialect would live in O.J.'s neighborhood), and Jennings bought it, hook, line & sinker. He ended the call with the line, "Baba booey to y'all". Jennings STILL didn't get it until Al Michaels called in and told him it was a goof. Weeks later, Michaels went on the Stern show and Howard replayed the phone call. I was lucky to get it on tape. LMAO!

Perhaps you missed my earlier comment about how horrible a loss this is. As a journalist, I respected Jennings most out of Brokaw and Rather. He struck the right balance, I felt, between function and humanity.

As for the comment that irked you so, I was responding to someone's comment about it being the "end of an era." Like it or not, diversity isn't exactly a strong suit of the national media, especially network TV.

Really, context is everything.

sad thing is Calhoun....even if you quit, you can still get lung cancer. It has a 95% death rate. It kills more ppl per year than all the other cancers combined and yet you don't hear this.

Peter Jennings and my mother came from the generation when there wasn't a big push to stop until recent years. My mom stopped smoking for almost ten years. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and died 9 months later. Its no joke. I pray for Christopher Reeves wife. She has been diagnosed with lung cancer and she was a non smoker.

Cancer sucks. confused
