1st of all just cause ur skinny don't mean ur healty... the meida has drilled it n images that skinny or the wafe look whatever its called is the "norm" ... 2nd she was on a radio station here talking bout this... and the dj was against the show as well until he talked to her and she informed him what the ladies are doing for this .... i think U need to watch the show before U jump off the handle n "assume" what its all about... we are always easy to judge others for things without having all of the facts... and since being fat is not the "norm" n the media then this show is being raked through the mud before anyone has seen it.... I plan on watching the show to see 1st hand. I thought the premise of the show deserved a discussion. I saw her on a talk show talking about eating more fried chicken and I started thinking, wtf are you talking about? How is that going to improve the self esteem of anyone? I'll watch the show this weekend and we can all chime in about what we think of the show.

Mo'Nique was also bragging about having 2 stomachs and 2 double chins. I dont think thats anything to brag about. That is just dangerous and unflattering to say the least. What gives her the idea that obesity is something to be flaunted? Its terribly irresponsible in a country (USA) where over half of the population is overweight/obese. Its just wrong to me. We ought to be encouraging healthy lifestyle habits, not anorexia or obesity.

U gotta be able to laugh at urself... Agreed! Just cause she's large doesn't mean everything she says should be her apologizing for the way she is and explaining what she's doing to change. You gotta have a sense of humour about yourself. |

I'm almost on board with what you're getting at. While acknowledging that being obese is by no means a healthy life, it's important 2 also remember that overweight people deserve more than shame. It gives in2 the idea that unless U r thin (or actively working 2 b thin), your life is empty, out of control and doomed. While it's not possible 2 b obese and healthy, it IS possible 2 b obese and happy. I think the purpose of this pageant is not 2 promote obesity (cuz really, who wants 2 b overweight?), but more 2 promote acceptance, loving one's self (which is really what self-esteem is isn't it?) and show that "beautiful" comes in every size. im so tired of the ideas that women have to come in a size 4 to be attractive there are folks that are 'large' that are ugly, but there are women that are tiny that are ugly too. its about time that 'larger' shaped women can be viewed by the public as attractive and have that be ok.... why even question it ??? i mean, when they put women up there that are skin and bones, we dont make threads that ask if we are wanting to become an anorexic society and if this means we should all not eat so the girls got a little more around the sides her beauty should be celebrated just like everyone elses. just my thoughts [flame snipped -Tom]

'plump' is one thing. flat out huge as a barge is quite another. Thank you. Mo'Nique should be ashamed of herself. Instead of lame excuses, she should be encouraging women to get healthy. No one's saying you have to an ugly-ass scarecrow like Paris, but you should be the right weight for your height & body type. Working out and eating sensibly takes discipline, something Mo'Nique doesn't have. I don't particularly enjoy lifting weights, running on the treadmill and sweating my ass off - but it's either that, or buy my clothes from Big & Tall. There's no magic pill for this sh!t. Believe me, as a former fat person, I know. Obese folks like Mo'Nique will pay for their bad habits sooner or later. I saw it during the recent NYC blackout when all of us who work in the Empire State Bldg. had to get out using the stairs. I saw so many obese people struggling and sweating their asses off trying to get out. If that's not a wake-up call to get yourself together, I don't know what is. dreamfactory313 said: IMO, morbid obesity is nothing to feel good about just like anorexia isnt anything to feel good about. So why is she doing this show? If she wanted to empower women, she would have changed her lifestyle habits and shown them that they could be healthy physically and emotionally if they took control of their lives. Eating more fried chicken is going to plunge them deeper into the depression that they may already find themselves in.

Monique is a trip to me... I've heard her on Apollo talking about working out & getting more toned, but that's she's not leaving the big girls behind she's just trying to be more healthy. She must feel a real alliance w/ the bigger women of the world - imagine what she's gone through in the entertainment industry being her size...
So I admire that she wants to remind big women that they're beautiful & boost their self esteem, I mean look @ her - she's a beautiful woman & very confident, I love her attitude about herself. At the same time it's dangerous to encourage obese folks to continue on the path they're on (recommending more fried chicken & shit like that, even if it's a joke ). Obesity is too much of an epidemic in this country right now to just say fuck it, you know? Who knows - maybe it's all to promote the show. She's dropping twins & will continue to be big for at least another year (or 2 or 3... or 5) so she's got minimum 2 seasons of this show to hope for. If everybody loses weight, who'll be on her show? I'm all for promoting healthy self-esteem and teaching peole to love themselves despite what society says is sexy and what's not, but I have a few problems with the fat-acceptance movement. First and foremost is the health issue that's already been brought up.
The other thing that bothers me is the rabid vilification of thin people and thinness that seems to go hand in hand with it. Just look at the tag on that picture: Skinny women are evil. What an immature, junior high thing to say. A more commonly heard, but just as bitchy, line is "Real women have curves". All I can say is: bullshit. I'm just as much a woman at my bony size 0/2 as my sister is at her curvy size 14. Perhaps behind such a bullshit line lies insecurity; a need to validate one's self and beliefs by putting down what is percieved as "the enemy"? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I can tell you that many people cover up their hatred of fat people by lingering on the "health" issue saying fat people shouldn't be content in their overweight-ness (is that a word?). They don't give a damn about the health of overweight people, they just don't like fat people, that's all. and yeah, perhaps Monique's "skinny women are evil" line is a little immature, but she IS a comedienne after all, it's supposed to be funny. Sometimes you have to be radical in order to change things. If people knew how to treat each other with respect regardless of their body size, then insecurity wouldn't even be an issue.
