Is Mo'Nique Promoting Obesity with her New Show?

Mo'Nique has a new reality tv show called Fat Chance debuting this week on the Oxygen network.. Shes got ten obese ladies competing in a beauty pagent to win prizes. She says that she is increasing the self esteem of plus sized women but doesnt seem to be promoting any healthy positive lifestyles. She isnt promoting exercise and food moderation as a means to improve self esteem at all. Its more like "the more fried chicken and biscuits that I eat, the better I'll feel about myself. "

What do u guys think? Is Mo'Nique promoting obesity or positive self esteem?

personally, i think its great woot!

im so tired of the ideas that women have to come in a size 4 to be attractive rolleyes there are folks that are 'large' that are ugly, but there are women that are tiny that are ugly too. its about time that 'larger' shaped women can be viewed by the public as attractive and have that be ok.... why even question it ??? i mean, when they put women up there that are skin and bones, we dont make threads that ask if we are wanting to become an anorexic society and if this means we should all not eat shrug so the girls got a little more around the sides woot! her beauty should be celebrated just like everyone elses.

I am a certified fitness trainer and I think that either extreme is dangerous. We shouldnt champion anorexia any more or less than morbid obesity. It is good to maintain a weight that is proportionate to one's height. Nothing more, nothing less.

U can find out more about the show @ http://www.oxygen.com/

totally understandable nod

the problem is when we say "morbid obesity" to me, that is someone who is hugely overweight... these girls are big, yes, but they dont qualify as "morbid obesity" in my eyes shrug

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a person is considered "obese" when he or she weighs 20 percent or more than his or her ideal body weight. At that point, the person's weight poses a real health risk. Obesity becomes "morbid" when it significantly increases the risk of one or more obesity-related health conditions or serious diseases (also known as co-morbidities). Morbid obesity--sometimes called "clinically severe obesity--is defined as being 100 lbs. or more over ideal body weight or having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher.

Mo'Nique and the contestants on this show look like they fall into this category. Mo'Nique isnt a terribly tall woman. She looks maybe about 5'6 and she publicly states that her weight is about 300 lbs. She should weigh less than half of that. She is over 100 lbs overweight and her BMI is over 40 (its almost 50). She is clinically MORBIDLY OBESE.

IMO, morbid obesity is nothing to feel good about just like anorexia isnt anything to feel good about. So why is she doing this show? If she wanted to empower women, she would have changed her lifestyle habits and shown them that they could be healthy physically and emotionally if they took control of their lives. Eating more fried chicken is going to plunge them deeper into the depression that they may already find themselves in.

[flame snipped -Tom] Just making an observation.

And you seem to have this thing where, if you say something that can be considered naughty to someone, you hug them. Keep your hug emoticons to yourself. A hug emoticon doesn't make what you say any better or worse.

Anyway, that was the first paragraph you've strong together I've ever went all the way through, and I'm sure it will be the last. Go look for some more symbols.

Im not saying that an obese person cant have a pretty face or wear nice clothes. I am not saying that obese people are less deserving of equality and being treated with kindness and repsect. All Im saying is that obesity should not be championed because it is dangerous to a person's physical and emotional wellbeing.

I understand what Mo'Nique is trying to do but I disagree with her way of doing it. People should feel good about who they are but they must understand the dangers of being obese. Its no joke. I work with obese people all the time.

I agree with you. As far as I'm concerned, that is lazy thinking on Mo'Nique's part. Mobidly obese people are fooling themselves, and won't live past the age of 60 if they don't do something about their problem.

the good news is, this wont last long im sure... the show doesnt fit the ideas of whats exceptable in our society - so folks wont watch it past the first few shows (if they even bother to watch it then). i just think its great that this group of women got up and said together, i may be 'fat' in your eyes, but damn it, i can do what everyone else can do... and i can look good doing it woot!

thats what im celebrating, the idea that women dont have to hang their heads or be shy about who they are...

thanks for pointing out the show, i will be watching it

I don't think this is 'promoting' morbid obesity. I doubt there will be teenage girls all across america thinking, 'gosh, I wanna be just like them. I better get myself a tub of fried, fat-soaked whatever fast.' It's just a beauty pagent with a different flavor.
While I understand the need to validate the worth of women of all shapes and sizes, in a way it just feeds more into our looks-obsessed culture. Fat is beautiful, thin is beautiful, blond is beautiful, black is beautiful... Until we learn as a society to look past the facade that is 'outer beauty' we're doomed to be bored to death by new and even more annoying beauty pagents.

I agree with this ...sorta. Queen latifah works out and yet is a bigger woman so we can't assume that bigger aren't active. I don't like Monique's banter about big is better and all of that but I think its also bs that we all can be a size 2. I remember being in college and getting down to a size 7/8 and I swear ppl thought I had an eating disorder. My mother was worried. But if I said to someone, I look really fly at a size 10, just by going by the size, many ppl would say that was a large size.

Many of don't even realize that plus size models are sizes 10 and up.....

there needs to be a balance....

WORK MOMMA!!!! Monique is my girl. I want to grow up to be her. Did anyone catch her at the BET awards performing CRAZY IN LOVE. What? She did her damn thing along with the other big girls.

I owe everything to big black women. They were my role models as a child.

There are fat people that are still basically healthy. I think people should lose weight if they just feel like it or if their health is being compromised.

I agree. A balance between mental as well as physical health. The two go hand in hand. It won't always be a perfect balance, but as long as an effort is put forth to be healthy, it's for the better in the long run.

i think that self-esteem and feeling good about oneself are extremely important.

but imo it's plain nuts to encourage someone who's obese to accept a life of obesity instead of working toward a healthier body size.

'plump' is one thing. flat out huge as a barge is quite another.

It's not like they can snap their fingers and drop 100 lbs overnight. There are many people who are severely overweight, who are in the process of trying to do something about it, but in the meantime are constantly being told how unattractive they are. In the meantime, whats the harm in doing a show like this to help people feel good about themselves, who they are right now. Stress and depression can take their toll on you just as much as excessive weight.

I doubt a healthy person is going to be inspired by Monique to run out and eat a case of twinkies after watching the show.

2nd she was on a radio station here talking bout this... and the dj was against the show as well until he talked to her and she informed him what the ladies are doing for this .... i think U need to watch the show before U jump off the handle n "assume" what its all about... we are always easy to judge others for things without having all of the facts... and since being fat is not the "norm" n the media then this show is being raked through the mud before anyone has seen it....
