I'm Driving across the country.....show me the way!

I am torn between a southern route or a northern route! For those of you that have made the trek, which is more fulfilling and scenic?

I've only taken the Northern route, but that was beautiful. Badlands, Devil's Tower, little Cowboy towns, Windy City... Not too shabby. I've gotten the impression that the southern route is more monotonous. shrug

I am leaning towards a northern route myself...I want to see the grand canyon, and the rockies, and some plain states...I wish I could see a tornado!

I've been both ways but I took about 2 weeks on the northern trip and about 3 days on the southern (had to get back) but it seems the northern route has all the stops. Niagra, Mount Rushmoore, Crazy Horse, Hover Damn,Yellowstone and heading south from there but I was going west...you are going east right?

lol Texas is horrendous. And it takes over a day to cross when you're on 10. There's no more desolate or depressing landscape, either.

then def do the northern route...
is it a round trip? you could take North on the way and South on the way back.
What will be your choice of lodging? hotels/motels or camping? We camped and we stayed at KOA campgrounds all the way across country. I like KOA's because they are all similar, convienently located (with highway signage),clean, and family oriented. They always have laundry facilities, hot showers and usually a pool or somekind of recreation like a rec room or mini golf or something silly like that. They also have small cabins you can rent for not much more then a tent site..less than 20 bucks a night...the cabins are cute...they have electricty and a set of bunk beds and one single bed. Good luck to ya! have a great trip. This country has vastly different landscapes and it's a true wonder to experience. I personally loved Crazy horse, Yellowstone, and ofcourse the Grand Canyon.

ok i been this route and here u go

Los angles to vegas(my favorite partytown) on I-15, then take i70 to denver. Beware, a stretch of 115 miles with no exit through the wildlands and mountains but pretty view, very pretty scene. Then from Denver go to mt rushmore. A lot of backroads there but it is a pretty view. Go to reptile gardens, bear country while at rushmore fun and cheap. Then from there (rapid city) go to I-90 throug hsouth dakota to Minnesota to wisconsin to chicago. Then take I-65 from chicago to indianapolis to I-70 i think again through Columbus and bam there go Pittsburgh a pretty city.

From pitt go to dc/balt/through richmond though charlotte and atlanta there you go all on I-95, bring your wallet cause tolls are high and a nuisance to. then atl just go south to florida. When u leave just take I-10 all the way to Los angeles and tell my family hello in New orleans when u pass through.

Crazy horse is just a drawing on a mountain unless they finished it. Grand canyon beautiful but u can see that also driving on I70 through utah and colorado.

Gasp! What? it is SO much more than that!! no, it's not finished yet but when I was there 10 years ago the horses head was basically carved out...but to me it was more about the history of Crazy horse and the legacy of the man who's mission it was to make the monument real, and now his son carries on his dream. I was moved by it.

I have driven across country twice and nothing beats New Orleans. The mountains and grand canyon are awesome but the history and food always brings me back to Louisana. The only thing I liked about Florida was Jacksonville and Orlando. I am still traumatize from Miami. How far down Florida are you going?

If you drive through Texas with California plates on your car they are going to stop you. I found that out after six tickets. California and Texas do not cooperate when it comes to paying fines so if you are stopped there you better have cash or you will end up in jail. Any moving violation on a highway and they will pull you over. Tail lights, signalling before changing lanes, etc. Take the northern route up if you want to avoid Texas. I had to drive through because I wanted to see New Orleans. It took me twenty nine hours to get from LA to New Orleans. I was hauling ass. And if I remember correctly I drove from New Orleans to Orlando in about eighteen. Jack and Orleans are not that far apart. Same as Atlanta. It all depends if you want scenic views or party spots. Do you want me to email you the route I took?

if you are heading to Denver, stop in Estes park, and go into the old rocky mountain national forest. Gorgeous. hit durango while you are west of denver too. there is so much just in that state!
