But you have to put people up in space as there are jobs that only they can do. DO you know how hard it is to operate machinery that far remote? WHat if it didn't work...then we'd be blasting billions out to space for nothing.

Also, I think that the Astronauts are WELL aware of the dangers that are embedded in the job...some with policemen and Highrise construction workers. I would imagine that the chance to actually work for NASA and be an astronaut and actually get to go into space FAR outweighs the risk that they take. I would think that many astronauts would prefer to go out with a bang..or at least have resolved themselves to that that may just happen.
