BananaCologne said: One of my fave films:
Much maligned, but I love it, and it touches me. ...As does this beauty of a film! One of the greatest thrillers ever made: You'll be on the edge of your seat throught. Don't you know me Kansas City? I'm the new Berlin Wall - TRY & TEAR ME DOWN! Fun, fun, fun... Probably the blackest comedy I've ever seen. These people's lives are so pathetic you can't help but laugh at them "Honey, we're not laughin at you - we're laughing with you" "...but I wasn't laughing..." Also worth it for Philip Seymour Hoffman - one of the best actors around today. If you like stories with twists in the tail ala 'Twilight Zone', this is for you - very creepy, and really different. Ray Wise is fantastic in this. What can be said about this classic that hasn't already been said? Still looks stunning even today - 20+ years on Cracking film! (be sure to grab the extended 'Untitled' version) and last but not least, my fave film of all time: Baraka. This has to be seen to be believed - at least once in your life. You've never seen anything like it - I guarantee it will mesmerise you. [Edited 7/26/05 8:54am] VANILLA SKY is SOO CRAP!!!!

THE ONLY ONE I INSIST YOU GO AND WATCH: "Purple Rain? Eh. Sign o the Times? Definitely not! Batman Soundtrack? Ah go on and chuck it." In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

Nikki23 said: Betty Blue...As well as providing a narrative that may be read and interpreted on several levels, _Betty Blue_ is an exceptionally beautiful film in terms of cinematography and mise en scene. Colour is used to breathtaking effect - the blue floors of the piano shop, the yellow car, the yellow lighting which makes it seem as though, regardless of time, it's always afternoon twilight. Landscapes, city scenes, interiors are all set up and filmed beautifully.. Yes! I'd recommend Amadeus, although I'm sure you've all seen that a million times.

These are some of my favorites. Not only are they fabulous and interesting to watch, they are incredibly mentally stimulating and thought provoking as well. I'm stealing the summaries from the imdb because I am terrible at being concise, though some of these summaries are pretty crappy.
Dark Star, dir. John Carpenter, 1974. "Low-budget story of four astronauts in deep space, whose mission is to destroy unstable planets in star systems which are to be colonised. The late Commander Powell is stored in deep freeze, where he is still able to offer advice. As their mission nears completion, they must cope with a runaway alien which resembles a beach-ball, faulty computer systems, and a "smart bomb" who thinks it is God." Open Water, dir. Chris Kentis, 2003. "A young thirtysomething couple goes on holiday to the Caribbean. One of the fun activities open to them is scuba diving off a reef several miles out. Due to a faulty head count taken by the dive boat crew, the couple is left behind in the open ocean. They find themselves drifting endlessly for hours on end, facing dehydration, saltwater sickness, jellyfish stings, and the most frightening menace - sharks!" Loosely based on a true story. Sedmikrasky, Vera Chytilová, 1966. (Czech film.) "Two teenage girls, both named Marie, decide that since the world is spoiled they will be spoiled as well; accordingly they embark on a series of destructive pranks in which they consume and destroy the world about them. This freewheeling, madcap feminist farce was immediately banned by the government." Dawn of the Dead, dir. Zack Snyder, 2004. "A young female nurse, named Anna, is caught in the middle of a world-wide chaos as flesh-eating zombies begin rising up and taking over the world and attacking the living. She escapes into the streets and is rescued by a black police officer, named Kenneth. Together they find shelter in a mall along with a group of other survivors." etc etc etc... Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens, dir. Russ Meyer, 1979. "Believe it or not even in Smalltown USA there are still people who are unfulfilled and unrelieved in the midst of plenty. Levonna & Lamar could have the perfect relationship if it were not Lamar's obsession with rear entry." (I removed the rest of the summary because it was filled with heavy spoilers.) I mean, like, where is the sun?

These are some movies I've been digging on lately ...
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (this HAS to be one of the best films of the last 10 years) "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" (why isn't this on DVD yet? WHY??) "Incident at Loch Ness" (so fucking funny!) "Garden State" (I saw this with my ex and was a basketcase for an hour.) "Jules and Jim" (Truffaut's best. Hands down)
