I have a sheltie. He barks his fool head off all of the damn time. My neighbor has a chow mix whose bark is pretty quiet. More raspy than anything else.

mine barks. a. lot. she is not a basenji. You're right... they DO growl though...usually a lot. I don't like basenjis, especially not when there's more than one of them at a time. They're lion hunters, very viscious in a pack.

barking is natural. if it bothers you or your neighbors, you may want to reconsider - there are already plenty of unwanted animals at the shelters.

These motherfuckers bark all the time. My grandfather had one and it couldn't keep it's mouth shut for a minute.

Mach said: Basenjis are known as barkless dogs, but in fact they can bark. They just seem to prefer not to. When basenjis do bark, it's one single sharp woof rather than continuous barking. Oh, I love Basenji's! A friend of mine had a beautiful tri-colored one. She did not bark but when she was a pup she would make a yoddle sound when she did not want to be in her crate. The best thing to do is research the breed carefully and talk to some ppl who have them to find out there temperment and the breed specific health problems. I have heard they are smart and stubborn and sometimes do not like strangers. Kind of describes my Australian Cattle dogs- They bark, that's for sure.

AMEN to that!!! I found the perfect dog for a friend of mine. The dog was being fostered by another friend of mine so I set everything up for them to meet and she took the dog home. The first day my friend left her apartment and left the dog with he husband for a few minutes. The dog cried and barked when she left due to being in a strange place. Her husband made her take the dog back and the foster mom told that them he rarely barks, which is true. Then my friend went to the pet store and spend a very large amount of money on a Papillion (sp?) and that dog barks 24/7. Since she spent so much money on the dog and got attached to it, she had to keep it. So, it is best to do your homework, be patient and check out all of the pounds in your area. Seriously, if it does bother your neighbours people should have the decency to either school the dog or just get rid of it.

get a Beagle. They very seldomly bark, and they are very mild mannered and loveable. The only drawbacks to them is they eat like crazy and are prone to neurotic behavior. But they're so damn cute, it's easy to overlook the cons.
There's adoption sites all over the US set up specifically for abandoned beagles http://www.pennyangelsbea...beagle.htm

that's the attitude! Ppl do not seem to realize that when you adopt a dog that it is a life long committment. Kind of like adopting a kid! I guess I look at it differently then some. When I adopt a dog, I do everything I can to give the dog a good home. I would have a hard time getting rid of something just because it does something that is natural. Barking is their way of communicating. Just my opinion!
