I have been invited to a pow wow!

I have a few friends who are native american and they have invited me to attend a pow wow with them. I'm kinda excited. I've never been to a pow wow before. I'm not sure what to expect, other than lots of food (as that's what my friend who invited me seemed most excited about, traditional native american food like fry bread and the like). I'm guessing there will be (native) drums and singing and dancing and such. Though I must say, I'm not entirely sure what I should wear... hmmm I've got 3 weeks to figure it out, though.

Has anyone ever been to a pow wow before?

I'm not sure this is the type of shindig where they'll be offering "Pow Wow '05" t-shirts. But just in case, what's your size?

One of the native americans attending is one of my best friends, and he also happens to be my hair stylist, so I can assure you my locks will be safe.

That made me laugh... lol

How interesting Carrie. What a memorable experience I am sure it will be. I love culture. Being from the Southwest... there is so much land that is still reservation here. I am drawn to their history and way of life now. Sad how they are comforming to our society... beautiful when they are still living their natural way.

I have had so many experiences with Native people here... and I did my student teaching in a predominant area where many Native American children still live on the reservation. What a powerful learning experience it was for me.

When I went hiking within the Grand Canyon... that was another amazing experience I had. The Natives that reside in the Canyon still live in a seemingly small, yet beautiful world... conformed with the demands of economical necessity. I held several conversations with them... whenever I saw a fit opportunity. They still live simple... considering how we live in this crazy hungry materialistic world.

Pow Wows... it can be powerful to experience... the pride they still have in their culture and past history of practice. The colors, the sound... the dance. The food... yum.... Indian Fried Bread is the best ever!

Dress natural. ~Smile.

smile That's exactly why I'm excited.
There are still quite a few reservations here in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Wisconsin so there is still a fairly vibrant 'community' in this part of the midwest as well.
It will be very fun for me to be with my friends, who are so far away from reservation life now, go back and be a part of that part of their history. And I feel quite honored, to be honest, to be invited to join them.

I'm not sure what tribe. My one friend who is going is Lakota Sioux and Ojibwe, the other I think is Dakota Sioux. (Incidentally, they both have 2 of my favorite names of all the people I know, one's first name is Naiche - pronounced nay-chay - and the other's last name is Little Wounded. smile )

Ask your friends what to wear.

Normally you wear everyday clothes. Have fun!

Nope! I'm safe. As per the above post I made:

One of the native americans attending is one of my best friends, and he also happens to be my hair stylist, so I can assure you my locks will be safe.

Side notes:

Many traditional rituals are observed.... Photos can't be taken of the opening ceremony as well as the pray circles..... technically you must ask to shoot. Ask your buddy for other apporopriate rules. There were many as I recall....
